Like all greatest-hits or best-of compilations, this one is missing some key ingredients, namely "S.O.S. (Dit Dit Dit Dat Dat Dat Dit Dit Dit)" and "Just the Way You Like It." Since the band didn't record tons of material and was only active a short time, the omissions are hard to fathom. It's not like they didn't have room on the CD; only ten songs are compiled here. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are well represented with eight songs. Despite the omissions, this is still good listening. Mary Davis' vocals are irresistible; she can do it all. On "Take Your Time (Do It Right)," she shows her funk side, matching the driving, disco-like beat with some powerful vocals. On "Tell Me if You Still Care," she sings in a softer voice, similar to a Smokey Robinson production for Mary Wells. She sings "Just Be Good to Me" with ...

TOO MUCH ACID? captures the 1989 stage show of Alien Sex Fiend, the gothic-industrial band led by Nik Fiend.
Even though this live blast of Fiend madness obviously lacks the visual elements of the band's performances that makes them so memorable -- prosthetic organs and massive cobwebs are just the start of it -- Too Much Acid? answers its own question pretty easily. If the Fiends aren't necessarily ripped on LSD or anything else, the musical dementia on display becomes a handy substitute for the real thing. Recorded at various dates during the European leg for the Another Planet album, the set list is heavy on material from that and It, plus a number of singles cuts from around that time, demonstrating nicely that the group was far from a revival act even when most of its Batcave contemporaries had long since disappeared. The guitar/drum combination of new members Rat Fink, Jr. and Doctor Milton serves up the feedback and beat with power, while Mr. and Mrs. Fiend respectively rant and man the keyboards with their usual gusto. "I Walk the Line" gets a fierce rendition here, possibly even more unnerving than the studio take, while the It album track "Get Into It," on vinyl an amusing enough trifle, gets a better vocal ...

The fact that there's a Marvin Gaye compilation called Love Songs seems rather silly, especially since most of the albums he released throughout his career could have been subtitled "Love Songs."
