| | Patrick O'Hearn Glaciation CD (2007)
Ocean Dream Music
$12.39 Patrick O’Hearn: Glaciation (self-released)It’s been awhile since a disc of ethereal, slow-moving instrumental music (this once would have been called “new age”) has captured my imagination like Patrick O’Hearn’s Glaciation has. Like the glaciers and icebergs that adorn the lovely CD package, these compositions have a spare, mysterious, other-worldly beauty. I mean to pay this release a high compliment when I note that some of this music recalls the most evocative work of Brian Eno, in the way O’Hearn places the instruments in different ambient fields and the way the tunes unfold so naturally and majestically. But far from being just a keyboard/synth workout, this features many other textures, from pulsing basses to electric Hawaiian guitar (recalling Eno’s ...
| | Mike Oldfield Music Of The Spheres CD (2008)
Ocean Dream Music
$10.69 The legendary British composer will always be most identified with his breakthrough long-play composition "Tubular Bells" and the way it was used to illuminate fear in The Exorcist. The happy truth is that since then he's amassed an incredible catalog of over 20 albums featuring just about every instrumental form but jazz: pop, classical, new age, world music, computer game, film soundtrack, etc. The title of his 2008 45-minute classical-influenced opus Music of the Spheres is a reference to the prolific and eclectic composer's feeling that all music should aim to represent the spiritual or otherworldly elements of life -- something beyond the ...

| | Michael Lee Firkins Decomposition CD (2001) (Import) Netherlands
Ocean Dream Music
$28.89 A guitar shredder along the lines of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, Firkins here takes on some surprising material, specifically the Duke Ellington classic "Caravan," and the theme from PINK PANTHER. But VINTAGE GUITAR magazine said this album is "a guitar player's dream," so obviously Michael Lee knew what he was doing.
Michael Lee Firkins is a guitar virtuoso that not many would want to match licks with. The group that he has put together for this album is certainly a perfect union. Together they have taken some classic pieces, plus one original, and transformed them into new vibrant presentations that are once again timeless masterpieces to be treasured. "Still Alive and Well," a Rick Derringer cover, is superbly laced with a tight rhythm section and well-crafted lead guitar riffs. The vocals are powerful and add strength to the piece in this dimension. The full rich tone will certainly appeal to fans of hot and heavy rock & roll. On "Manic Depression," a Jimi Hendrix cover, for the first time on the album one has the chance to examine the lead guitar virtuoso, Michael Lee Firkins, at his finest. Jimi Hendrix would certainly be pleased to hear his piece, kicked up a notch and spiced with some expressive phrases that show that this guitarist is most certainly experienced. The drum work by Trevor Thornton displays ingenuity with some creative fills that form a steadfast foundation for Firkins to expand from. "I Need You," a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover, really allows Sonny Reece to present his amazing vocals ...
