BURNING BRIDGES is a 1999 collection of 10 death metal songs by Sweden's Arch Enemy.

While some of the genre's hardcore aficionados might disagree, death metal tempered with a dab of accessibility is generally a more enticing proposition--not only does it render the intensity more consistently listenable, it also increases the chances of a band developing an original voice, since the group doesn't tie itself down to genre conventions. Arch Enemy are one such band, having honed a potent blend of classic-style death metal, melodic twin-guitar leads à la the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, touches of prog metal and of grindcore courtesy of later Carcass or Napalm Death, and just plain solid riff writing. BURNING BRIDGES, their third effort, consolidates the gains made on its predecessor STIGMATA, establishing Arch Enemy as a dependable force and one of the better bands working death metal territory as the '90s drew to a close.

Recorded in December 1998 and January 1999.

The Japanese version of the song includes two bonus tracks.

Additional Tracks

Producers: Fredrik Nordstrom, Michael Amott.

Arch Enemy: Johan Liiva (vocals); Michael Amott, Chris Amott (guitar); Sharlee D'Angelo (bass); Daniel Erlandsson (drums).

Additional personnel: Per Wiberg (piano, Mellotron); Fredrik Nordstrom (keyboards).

CMJ (7/26/99, p.34) - "...a progressive metal super-group....assures Sweden's status as the chief exporter of metal with rock roots."

5 stars Awesome Metal for All !
My new favorite band! The guitar work by the Amott brothers just blows you away with each release. This CD is more accessible than their previous two and should be in every real Metal fan's collection! My only complaint would be that it is too short at 36 minutes. Can't wait to get the new CD with the new vocalist!
