On her second album as a solo artist, 2001's I'M STAYING OUT, former Whiskeytown fiddler Caitlin Cary builds on the strength of her debut, WHILE YOU WEREN'T LOOKING, while expanding her sound with producer Chris Stamey of the DBs to include more fleshed-out arrangements and instrumentation. Cary is supported this time out by a stellar lineup of guest stars including jangle rock veterans Don Dixon and Mitch Easter, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Bruce Springsteen cellist Jane Scarpantoni. Cary impresses most, of course, when she steps to the fore with her fiddle on tracks such as the title cut and "Please Break My Heart."
Recorded at Overdub Lane, Durham, North Carolina.
Personnel: Caitlin Cary; Jen Gunderman (vocals, accoridion, piano, organ); Dave Bartholomew (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Don Dixon (guitar, bass); Brian Dennis (guitar); Jon Wurster (drums, percussion); Mary Chapin Carpenter, Chris Stamey, Greg Humphreys, Audley Freed, Thad Cockrell, Mitch Easter.

| | Lucinda Williams World Without Tears CD (2003)
I'm Staying Out
$12.05 WORLD WITHOUT TEARS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Righteously" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Though it's ultimately a less balladic, more stylistically varied album than its dreamy predecessor ESSENCE, WORLD WITHOUT TEARS starts out with a slow-burning, reverb-drenched ballad, but then takes a sharp turn into sensual lyricism, pounding drums, and churning guitar on "Righteously." For some time, the dominant topic of Lucinda Williams albums has been the edgy appeal of dangerous, often doomed men, and true to form there are plenty of those on WORLD WITHOUT TEARS. Witness the tragic anti-hero of "Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings," the troubled guy with the "sexy crooked teeth" in "Overtime," or the psychologically damaged character whose "Sweet Side" still calls out to the singer.

| | Jayhawks Rainy Day Music CDs (2003)
I'm Staying Out
$15.15 You never can tell what Americana/alt-country heroes the Jayhawks will do next. They started out with two voices in singer/songwriters Marc Olsen (sp?) and Gary Louris. After Olsen split, Louris spearheaded the band's most angular, least country album THE SOUND OF LIES, but RAINY DAY MUSIC turns the tables yet again by presenting the softest, most acoustic, ballad-oriented side the band has ever shown. Things start out fairly perky with the sparkling, jangly folk-rock of "Stumbling Through the Dark" and the poppy "Tailspin," but after that the melodic acoustic guitars and golden harmony vocals recall nothing so much as vintage Crosby, Stills & Nash. This is obviously no accident, as "Madman," the most overtly CSN-like tune, features a guest appearance by none other than Steve Stills's son Chris. Louris's top-notch singing and winning way with a melody carry through the album brilliantly. If someone's going to represent '70s-style folk-rock in the 21st century, RAINY DAY MUSIC leaves little doubt about the guys to whom the task should fall.

| | Ryan Adams Rock N Roll CD (2003)
I'm Staying Out
$12.59 As the album's title indicates, this is Ryan Adams' full-on rock outing. Here the former Whiskeytown leader/enfant terrible eschews all twang in favor of indulging his alt-rock id, and the result is a whirlwind tour through rock & roll history as filtered through his trademark swagger. Adams wears his influences brazenly, like patches sewn ...

I'm Staying Out
$14.35 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning ...
