Principally recorded at Cherokee Studios, Hollywood, California. Includes interviews conducted by Alan K. Stout.
Whereas Motley Crue's 1981 debut TOO FAST FOR LOVE was glam rock-based (both musically and visually), 1983's now-classic sophomore effort, SHOUT AT THE DEVIL, had more in common with heavy metal. The album served as The Crue's commercial breakthrough, going double-platinum shortly after it's release (and eventually reaching quadruple-platinum status) and spawning several popular MTV videos. Motley Crue toured behind SHOUT as an opener for Ozzy Osbourne, and the success of the album also helped open the floodgates for the L.A. metal scene.
SHOUT AT THE DEVIL is undoubtedly Motley Crue's all-time best. The set includes anthems galore (the title track, "Looks That Kill," and the melodic "Too Young to Fall in Love"), lesser-known tales of sex, violence, and sin ("Bastard," "Red Hot," "Knock 'Em Dead Kid," "Ten Seconds to Love," "Danger"), and a vicious cover of The Beatles' "Helter Skelter." All the tracks are winners. SHOUT's satanic cover imagery and graphic lyrics drew fire from religious organizations, as did the band's rock mag-fueled hedonistic reputation. Nonetheless, SHOUT AT THE DEVIL remains one of the finest metal albums of the '80s.

Shout At The Devil album
$21.25 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared on the soundtrack for the first chapter ...

| | Venom Welcome To Hell CD (1981)
Shout At The Devil album
$10.45 Welcome to Hell, and Venom themselves, for that matter, have long been the subject of heated debate within the heavy metal community. Few bands have been as recognizably influential yet so universally panned by critics during their careers, and, of course, it was this, their first long-player, which ignited most of that controversy in the first place. This shocking debut was the scene of a bloody, head-on collision between Black Sabbath's original heavy metal commandments and lyrical obsessions with all things demonic, and Motörhead's unparalleled distortion and breakneck speed. Make no mistake: Welcome to Hell, more than any other album, crystallized the elements of what later became known as thrash, death, black, and virtually every other form of extreme metal, serving as a primer for thousands of post-New Wave of British Heavy Metal teens to follow. Primitive with a capital ...

Shout At The Devil CD music
$15.55 NOTES FROM BIG SUR contains a series of pieces that flow easily into one another, giving a through-composed feel to the album. There are plenty of peaks and valleys on this date, but for the most part, saxophonist Charles Lloyd and his ensemble maintain a subtle ballad sensibility throughout. Lloyd's own gossamer playing is very legato on much of this album, avoiding the harsher tone and avant-garde tendencies of some of his early recordings. Of course, ECM producer ...
| | Alicia Keys Songs In A Minor CD (2001) Import
Shout At The Devil music CDs
$40.89 Alicia Keys won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. SONGS IN A MINOR won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "Fallin'" won the 2002 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song.
Picture Roberta Flack with hip-hop trimmings or D'Angelo coming at the world from a female perspective and you get an idea of the immense talent welling up from musical prodigy Alicia Keys. Blessed with a soulful voice, mature-beyond-her-years songwriting, and a classically trained command of piano, it's no wonder music mogul Clive Davis brought the 20-year old performer over from Arista as one of the flagship artists for his new label J Records. Keys displays impressive range on this primarily self-penned debut that finds her taking part in arranging and/or production on every cut, once again redeeming Davis's instincts.
Besides the well-earned buzz for the gripping love-and-loathe single "Fallin'," Keys earns high marks for fusing rap beats and vintage Aretha on a confidently delivered cover of Prince's "How Come You Don't Call Me." Elsewhere, the native New Yorker's flow finds her traversing the same ground as early-'70s Stevie Wonder on the thought-provoking "The Life," while "Goodbye" proves to be the quintessential Quiet Storm kiss-off. Keys wraps up SONGS with a sanctified mix of stride piano, lush strings, and gospel-flavored back-up singers on "Lovin' U."
Like Erykah Badu and other retro-soul artists who have followed her, Alicia Keys is trying to redefine modern R&B by injecting it with jazz and blues. In Songs in A Minor, Keys accomplishes her goal with poise and skill. The highlight of the album is "Fallin'," the debut single that features a haunting piano-and-strings arrangement reminiscent of James Brown's classic "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." Keys' piano work on "Butterflyz" and "Goodbye" is equally impressive, as is her flair for up-tempo numbers such as "Jane Doe." [The Japanese edition has two unlisted bonus tracks, both of which have lyrics printed inside the cover: "Lovin' U" and "Rear View Mirror."] ~ Jon Azpiri

$13.69 Sweetwater is Tres Chicas' recorded debut, but it's not like they're new at this. Old pals from the Raleigh, NC, area, Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown), Tonya Lamm (Hazeldine), and Lynn Blakey (Glory Fountain) finally found some time to record a batch of their own harmony-twined songs, and juice the set with a few covers. Appropriately, it's their voices that lead listeners to Sweetwater -- they mesh effortlessly if need be, but are also careful supporters of each lead vocal turn. Songwriting is divvied as democratically, and draws on the varying country, folk, and rock ...
