Paired with arranger Ralph Burns, who likewise sidesteps his usual subtle refinement for a lighter, more lively approach, Kenney retains the thoughtful phrasing and sultry demeanor that are her signatures, but it's a pleasure to hear her tackle material like "You Make Me Feel So Young" and "You Go to My Head" with such unabashed gusto. Far out -- like wow, the colors.... Seriously, the Psychedelic Psoul portion of this two-LPs-on-one-CD package (the Freak Scene's album is paired on the same CD with Hard Rock from the Middle East by the Devil's Anvil) is a complete period piece -- it is also one of the spacier psychedelic records to come out of Columbia, a label that didn't exactly jump into the Summer of Love headfirst. Some of the songs aren't much more than audio montages -- "'...When in the Course of Human Events'" and "The Subway Ride Thru Inner Space" aren't much more listenable than David Crosby's "Mind Gardens," which at least had the excuse for its existence that Crosby was doing lots of drugs. Most of the rest is surprisingly engaging mid-1967 psychedelia, some with nice tunes ("Butterfly Dream," "Rose of Smiling Faces"), and even one outing with a Bo Diddley beat ("The Center of My Soul"). In some ways, THE MAGIC HOUR marks some major changes for Wynton Marsalis; after what must seem like a lifetime on Columbia, it's his first record for Blue Note. He's also working with a group of younger musicians in a new quartet. And after a series of conceptual pieces, classical performances, big-band outings and the like, it's a return to the small-group format. At the same time, listening to Marsalis's precise-but-effortless trumpet elocution and natural swing, it's easy to feel like nothing has changed in the trumpet doyen's musical heart of hearts since his first recordings in the early 1980s.
