3 stars Great Example of Top Drawer Flatpicking
Shows why he's earned the respect of his mentors as well as listeners. Fresh, crisp and assertive is how I'd describe his playing.

The Storms Are on the Ocean -- Only about thirty years old, North Carolina guitarist Bryan Sutton has put new meaning into the term "bluegrass guitar" and has even taken home the coveted IBMA "Guitar Player of the Year" Award in 2000. Versed in many genres of music and with considerable experience under his belt, Sutton's desire to do more session work eventually took him to Nashville where he joined a gospel group called "Mid South." In 1995, Sutton joined Ricky Skaggs' band, Kentucky Thunder, and his flashy playing caught the attention of the bluegrass community on Skaggs' "Bluegrass Rules" album. The group evolved into a large bluegrass band, and Sutton's sizzling guitar and powerful rhythms helped define the band's sound. Within a few years, he was sharing a Grammy award and playing on projects from such artists as Aubrey Haynie, Jerry Douglas, Don Rigsby, Bobby Hicks, Rhonda Vincent, Tina Adair, Dixie Chicks, and Dolly Parton. Filling in for the injured Tony Rice with the Bluegrass Sessions gave Bryan continued acclaim as he continually amazed audiences with his distinctive precision guitar leads. His solo "Ready To Go" project with many stellar guests matched musicians to material across a broad range of styles. From well-crafted instrumentals, including five penned by Sutton himself, to covers of artists as diverse as U2 and Django Reinhardt, it's an album that truly reflects the creativity and talent of one of the most exciting young musicians on the scene today. Somewhere along the road, Bryan Sutton picked up a nickname of "Bionic Bryan". This new recording displays his incredible talent as he impressively glides around on slow numbers like "Margaret's Waltz" and sets his strings ablaze on the fast tunes. I don't think I've ever heard Bill Monroe's "Roanoake" performed with such precision at such a breakneck speed. That surely gave Tim O'Brien a good workout. Actually, the picking gets so frenetic on this album, that I'm glad he chose to close with something a little slower, melodic and reflective, A.P. Carter's "The Storms are on the Ocean." Flatpicking guitar at its finest, Sutton is right up there alongside legends like Doc Watson and Tony Rice. "Hangman's Reel," Nelia's Dance," and "The Storms are on the Ocean" are clear standouts. Sutton provides a few personal liner notes about each of his song selections. He also lined up some fantastic musicians to help out: Dennis Crouch (bass), Tim Crouch (fiddle), Tim O'Brien (mandolin), and David Talbot (banjo and rhythm guitar). This album is a killer. Ricky Skaggs Live At The Charleston Music Hall CD  (2003)

Bluegrass Guitar

Recorded live at Charleston Music Hall, Charleston, South Carolina in November 2002. LIVE AT THE CHARLESTON MUSIC HALL was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. "A Simple Life" won for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Get Up John" was nominated for Best Country Instrumental Performance. Though he enjoyed his greatest commercial success as a mainstream country crooner, Ricky Skaggs is known to many fans as an ace guitar and mandolin picker whose first love is bluegrass. After returning to that love full-time in the late '90s, Skaggs formed Kentucky Thunder, an incredible backing band capable of following wherever Skaggs leads. LIVE AT THE CHARLESTON MUSIC HALL is that group's first live album, and it's a winner. With enough jaw-dropping chops to make Yngwie Malmsteen run home and break out the scale book, the band absolutely roars through the opening track, "Black Eyed Suzie," and rarely lets up thereafter. Of course, It helps that Skaggs is both a fantastic songwriter and song selector. His versions of traditional tunes regularly take unexpected twists and turns, and he manages to make even an oft-covered pop chestnut like ...

This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series. The early recordings of Wayne Shorter retain a special place in the hearts of jazz aficionados. During his prolonged apprenticeship as a sideman in the 1960s, Shorter managed to outstrip such formidable leaders as Art Blakey and Miles Davis, becoming the defining conceptual catalyst in their greatest ensembles--both as a composer and improviser. Over the course of several albums as a leader for Alfred Lion's Blue Note label, Shorter transcended the long shadows of such important early influences as John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, developing an elliptical style all his own, and a fantastic repertoire of original material. These recordings, with their extraordinary range of styles and moods, confirm Shorter's place in the pantheon of modern jazz immortals. In a sense, SCHIZOPHRENIA refers to the split personalities of a musician capable of exploring traditional ideas and adventurous experimental fare with equal vigor, originality and musical curiosity. Dating from March of 1967, SCHIZOPHRENIA presents a mature combination of contrasting musical designs, from the joyous concoction of blues and salsa sources that ...
