| | Pink & Brown Shame Fantasy II CD Pink & Brown Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Shame Fantasy II collects the three-quarter hours of recorded output of the short-lived Pink & Brown two-man costume noise-rock extravaganza. Guitarist Pink is John Dwyer (Ohsees, Dig That Body Up, Up Its Alive, the Coachwhips, Zeigenbock Kopf) and drummer Brown is Jeff Rosenberg (also ofLumen, the Young People). Together they make a bustle and skree spit drum screamfest worthy of Dwyer's mid-'90s Providence, RI background. The CD compiles three sessions and is arranged in reverse chronological order, compiling five previously unreleased tracks recorded by Dave Broekema of Numbers, five tracks from a split with Death Drug, and Final Foods, their full-length LP. Unsurprising, this makes for a 22-song album spiralling from razor-crazed grooves and noise to sludgy, sometimes amateurish experimentation. Early tracks like "Enter Officer, Exit Wound" sear with energy, though recorded badly enough that the tight, scrappy noise sounds distant and somewhat untouchable. "Sherriff Jessum," from the split, makes the jump to tight, mature songwriting, evidence of their having soaked in the rays thrown by 2002 tour mates Lightning Bolt. The dirgy, dirty rock bass and constant crashing of "Messy Bessy, Get Undressy" and "Black Pearl," full of upfront buzz and danceable noise-rock charisma, show that the band, last recorded on January 1, 2003, packed it up at a peak. Because the two lived in separate cities, and toured with scene makers like the Bolt, Pink & Brown never reached the same acclaim as their contemporaries, but still had an explosive live presence and discernibly unique sound in the noise rock pantheon. ~ Daphne Carr

Shame Fantasy II
$13.05 Kila Kila Kila, finds OOIOO retreating somewhat from the elaborate psychedelia of Green and Gold, opting instead for a sparser, but just as hypnotic, sound as exemplified by the lovely, lighter-than-air "Ene Soda" and "Northern Lights." The album's lengthiest tracks, such as "Sizuku Ring Neng" and "Aster," showcase this direction. The latter song begins its 15-minute excursion with typically eclectic instrumentation -- including cello and contrabass -- and masses of P-We's vocals, then shifts to prickly guitars and a rolling bassline. The song then shifts to a darker, more angular feel before segueing into a percussion-led passage, and then ends with a more serene version of its opening motif. ...
| | Tom Waits Real Gone CD (2004)
Shame Fantasy II
$13.25 The absence of piano is significant--Waits's jazzy harmonic underpinning is entirely dismantled here, leaving only the most basic, blues-oriented structures atop which Waits hangs his distinctive poetic imagery, at once surreal and highly detailed. There's an overwhelming sense of darkness ("How's It Gonna End," "Dead and Lovely"), but there are also moments of ...
| | Prurient Black Vase CD (2005)
Shame Fantasy II
$13.15 Pitched somewhere between S&M fests -- a chunk of the album art might as well be Merzbow approximations if not direct outtakes -- and instrumental abuse that will prompt tinnitus checks while any dogs in the area dance wildly about, Black Vase shows that it just needs a day for Prurient to do what it does. Quite literally -- the whole album was recorded at a one-day session, with sole Prurient member Dominick Fernow occasionally helped by engineer Kris Lapke on drums and related beats. "Roman Shower" demonstrates that it's not only possible to create "ambient" music that irritates, but that even at low volume high-pitched squeals are just plain obnoxious -- and that to keep it going for 15 minutes is as perfect a way to find out just who will have the patience to listen to the rest of the album and who will run away screaming. At least after a while he breaks into extended periods of more conventional if frenetic feedback buzz, ...
| | Hospitals I've Visited The Island Of Jocks And Jazz CDs (2005)
Shame Fantasy II
$12.95 Following up a covers EP with a second album of all-original songs, the Hospitals embrace the noise-via-Load Records aesthetic through, on the face of it, expected ways. Unconventional/"ugly" mixes, the blunt art-yet-not cover art and design, aggro-spacticism, and so forth. But the flip side of the noise approach has always been a sometimes subliminal fascination with silence and space as the counterpart, and that element, plus a similarly low-key catchiness, is what makes this album stand out a bit from the crowd. Adam Stonehouse's drumming is often a massively rumbling rampage but is rarely messy, but it's his singing that's ...
