1349's debut album, Liberation, wraps the storied black metal history of its homeland (Norway, naturally) in a tattered cloak and vomits forth a suitably nasty set of songs drenched in "necro" aesthetics. Sure, the record doesn't break any new ground, but fans of this kind of hyperspeed, blastbeat-ridden reptilian belching will find plenty to enjoy here. The production reaches for the lo-fi garage-demo quality of early Darkthrone gargles, but accidentally on purpose sounds clear, organic, and concise, drums rattletrapping in the background, electro-distorted guitars buzzing like hordes of locusts in yer skull, craggy vocal rasps buried in the ensuing avalanche, and no bass whatsoever amidst the rubble. The songs are fairly well realized for this brand of eardrum cremation, the epitome being the harshly titled "I Breathe Spears" and the album-closing duo of "Liberation" and "Buried By Time and Dust"; "Riders of the Apocalypse" even slows down long enough for the listener to actually decipher a couple of chunky thrash riffs nipped from an old Kreator album. Blatant influences include Immortal's Battles in the North and most of the Satyricon back catalog (not a surprise, considering Satyricon drummer Frost is permanent skin-basher for 1349), and while Liberation is far from original, it is a quality black metal workout -- sans keyboards or any other goth fluff -- from a band ripe with promise, thanks to multiple shotgun blasts of chilly, misanthropic atmosphere and old-school black metal teeth-gnashing. ~ John Serba
Debut from growing Norwegian Black Metal band featuring current/former members of Satyricon. The five-piece have played along side the likes of Gorgoroth and Cadaver Inc. 10 tracks. Candlelight Records. 2003.

Liberation
$13.05 Digitally remastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound, New York, New York.
With a shockingly tight performance and a handful of evil anthems, Glen Benton and company managed to craft a death metal classic with their eponymous debut. Taking their Satanism to a new level of seriousness, Benton was burning crosses into his forehead and desecrating churches to promote this album, something that didn't exactly endear them to the mainstream metal media. While similar (and even weaker) groups were getting hyped up as the leaders of the death metal underworld, this album struck a chord that would, for good or bad, instantly inspire ...

| | Gorgoroth Twilight Of The Idols (In Conspiricy With Satan) CD (2003) In Conspiricy With Satan
Liberation
$13.15 Norwegian black metal vets Gorgoroth have long been an underrated band, never matching the critical acclaim of Darkthrone or Emperor, the sales of Cradle of Filth, or the legendary infamy of Mayhem or Burzum. Still, since the mid-'90s at least, they've had as much to offer as any of those bands (and not simply because the other bands' members all seemed to be dying or going to jail). With Twilight of the Idols, they stick to the sort of nihilistic, unpretentious yet still musically daring black metal that is their strong point. Whereas their previous album, 2000's Incipit Satan, was about halfway brilliant but weighted down by a few experimental excursions that didn't quite work, Twilight is all meat and potatoes, and it all hits the spot. Opener "Procreating Satan" sets the tone, combining hypnotic, Darkthrone-like minor-key ...
| | 1349 Hellfire CD (2005)
Liberation
$12.69 Let's compare Hellfire, 1349's third full-length album, to a professional dominatrix or a horror movie. Just as there are different approaches in metal, there are different approaches in S&M and horror. There is the dominatrix who favors nuance and offers some hugs and caresses along with her whips, chains, and riding crops; there is, on the other hand, the domme who goes right for the cat-o-nine-tails and immediately inflicts as much pain as possible. There are nuanced vampire movies of the '30s and '40s that leave much to the imagination; there are the Jason and Chuckie bloodfests that leave absolutely nothing to the imagination. And when it comes to death metal/black metal (more black metal than death metal on Hellfire), 1349 is clearly the headbanger equivalent of Chuckie rather than Barnabus Collins (the nuanced ...

Liberation
$12.79 INFINITY was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Musical Album For Children.
The smiling fish (a trout?) on the cover of Infinity captures the mood of Trout Fishing in America. The fish doesn't seem aware that five more fish are directly behind him, ready to make him part of the food chain. This is fun music for kids and adults. Who could resist singing along to "Junk Food Jump," a catchy tune that glorifies "Ice cream, potato chips, pie, and a coconut cake/Cotton candy, bubble gum, and a big strawberry shake"? Lou and Peter Berryman's "It's Better Than That" informs kids that being an adult is really -- so much more fun than they could imagine. "We have a chocolate éclair about as big as your head/Just before noon before we get out of bed." Trout Fishing in America is the accidental creation of Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood. They write most of their material together, sort of like Lennon and McCartney for children, and release their music on their own label, Trout Records. The great thing about Infinity is that with the exception of a little tree-hugging ("Everything That's Made of Wood"), the album is mostly free of "grown-up propaganda." That means it's just about being a kid and doing the things that kids do. Better yet, these guys make it all so much fun. For fans, Infinity is another winner; for those unfamiliar with Trout Fishing in America, this is a good album to start one's acquaintance. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
