Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark: Paul Humphreys (vocals, keyboards, percussion, electronic percussion, programming); Andy McCluskey (vocals, keyboards, bass, electronic percussion, programming).
This 1980 debut by the duo of Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys is an important milestone in the history of synth-pop. Prior to ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK, synthesizer-based pop was either austere and/or deliberately unpleasant such as Kraftwerk or Throbbing Gristle, or novelty music the likes of M's "Pop Muzik."
This eponymous set was among the first by an almost entirely synthesizer-based band to focus on the creation of catchy, melodic pop songs. The tunes and lyrics are substantial, with the lovely "Julia's Song," and the semi-hit "Electricity," among the standouts. Other songs, like "The Messerschmitt Twins"--an early contender for the band name--and "Pretending To See the Future," are more atmospheric, but never formless. Although later OMD albums were more assured and technically complex, this is one of their best.
Includes liner notes by Paul Browne.

| Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark Music Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Brilliance.... A completely brilliant effort from the fab duo that make up OMD. This is so worth the money! Especially for the bonus material. Their original and innocent beginnings are some of the finest electronica ever created. Get this if you are a fan of early 80's electro. computerized debut omd are like ahead of the time because of the futuristic instrumentals that sounds like battlestar galactica. this debut is like punk with synths. even though there are 2 members in the group, live drummers and other instruments help the band from sounding like a computer. one of the members did not like the older version of messages because it is too slow so they make an addictive single version as a hit and a bonus track. i liked the synths on all the tracks. bunker soldiers, julia's song, red frame/white light and more. very ahead of the time those guys. get it. This is my favourite OMD With songs like Electricity, Bunker Soldiers, and Red Flame / White Light, this would be the best OMD album. As with all their stuff, it has its good points and weak points, but that is what you get with those early experimental electronic band. Worth a listen. Recommended. Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
$9.58 San Francisco's Train hit the charts with a bang early in the 21st century with hits like "Calling All Angels" and "Drops of Jupiter." They began as a band that courted an alternative audience and quickly traded it -- without changing their sound much -- for a more adult fanbase ...

| | Mark Knopfler Get Lucky CD (2009)
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
$15.65 With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire Straits, there are obvious similarities, even if he has taken a deliberately different path as a solo artist. Basically, he's a lot quieter. "Border Reiver," the first song here, begins with a pennywhistle and a piano, then strings join in. Soon enough, Knopfler's distinctive conversational baritone begins calmly intoning lyrics, and eventually there are examples of his melodic fingerpicked guitar style on both acoustic and electric guitar. He even works up to a smoldering swamp rock shuffle, a la J.J. Cale, on ...

| | Beatles Revolver CD (1966) Limited Edition; Remastered; Digipak; Enhanced CD
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
$15.25 This reissue of REVOLVER has been digitally re-mastered. It comes packaged with replicated original U.K. album art, an expanded booklet containing original and newly written liner notes, and rare photos. Limited quantities of the CD are embedded with a brief documentary film about the album.
Arguably the first psychedelic rock album, REVOLVER was praised for its musical experimentation--the Indian sounds of "Love You To," the Motown-inspired "Got To Get You Into My Life," the backwards guitar in "I'm Only Sleeping." "Tomorrow Never Knows" was the most radical departure from previous Beatles' recordings for its skeletal bass/drums propulsion enhanced only with tape loops (contributed by all four Beatles and added in the mix-down process), more backwards guitar, and an eerie John Lennon vocal.
Still, the Beatles' experimentation grew out of their songwriting, which had matured beyond formula pop. "Tomorrow Never Knows" was inspired by the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Harrison's ...
| | Buckcherry Live & Loud 2009 CD (2009)
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
$8.49 When Buckcherry hit the scene in the mid-'90s, few would have predicted that the raunchy, stripper pole/retro-hair metal outfit had a 15-year career ahead of it, let alone a Grammy nomination. Despite the nearly complete dissolution of the band in 2002, Buckcherry ...
| | Roy Orbison Combo Concert: Holland 1965 CD (1998)
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
$16.19 Since the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Roy Orbison is usually the epic orchestral sweep of melodramatic bolero-style hits like "Running Scared" and "It's Over," it can be hard to remember sometimes that Orbison was at heart a rock & roller. This excellent archival release of live sets recorded in Paris and Amsterdam in March, 1965, proves this aspect of Orbison's musical personality once and for all.
Backed by a tight beat-group-style combo led by guitarist Bill Dees, who co-wrote a number of Orbison's biggest hits, Orbison sings and plays with graceful nonchalance. Even ballads ...

| | Damien Rice 9 CD (2006)
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
$15.65 Even when backed by an electric guitar ("Me, My Yoke, and I") or adding variety by including vocalist Lisa Hannigan, Rice's approach is restrained and reflective. At its best, as on the chilly confessional "The Animals Were Gone" or the woozy, bleary shuffle of "Gray Room," 9 matches its predecessor. But even when not making great leaps forward, the album establishes a pleasant holding pattern for Rice, and is sure to please fans of his first effort and intrigue those hearing the artist for the first time.
