Sheol music CDs
$14.15 Showcasing a decade of the Trojan label, from 1968-1978, the sleeve notes claim this three-CD box set is "an ideal introduction to the company's output." However, this is a rather disingenuous statement considering that a number of the label's biggest stars are missing, and there's few enduring hits to be had within. So once again, Trojan offers up a box that is not really what fans want, yet inevitably contains tracks they need, scooping up minor hits and rarities, the crucial and the disposable willy-nilly. As is all too typical, no attention is paid to sound quality, and a number of the tracks are taken off vinyl, with the Silverstars' badly scratched "Old Man Say" reaching a nadir of virtual unlistenability. For non-specialists, the points of entry are the Maytals' exuberant "54-56 That's My Number," Derrick Morgan's inspired reggae remodel of his ska classic "Fat Man," and Ken Boothe's pop-soul delight "Keep My Love From Fading." Most everything else will draw a blank, although the many names of artists and bands will convince fans to take a chance. Disc one, which covers 1968-1969, includes such small masterpieces as Clancy Eccles' devaluation classic "Bangarang Crash," the Silvertones' harmony-laden "Promises," and two excellent numbers from former Paragon vocalist Tyrone Evans. Scintillating instrumental versions are strewn across this disc and the entire box. Disc two, culling from 1970-1973, boasts a pair of soulful singles from the much underrated Joe White, two songs from the always-fabulous Jackie Edwards, and the Deltones' phenomenal cover of "I'll Take You There." By this point ...

| | Hand Of Doom Live In Los Angeles: Black Sabbath Tribute CD (2002)
Sheol CD music
$8.15 Ozzy Osbourne was a charismatic banshee, pronouncing his words with a smooth clarity and chilling detachment that made him stand out among the many traditional blues-rock vocalists during the early years of metal. Few could possibly manage to harness that unique style, let alone inject their own personality into it. Luckily, one of those few singers is Melissa Auf Der Maur, alternative rock diva and survivor of two of the most trouble-ridden bands of the '90s, Hole and the Smashing Pumpkins. Handling lead vocal duties for the first time in her career, Auf Der Maur mimics Osbourne's delivery perfectly, but she also adds a bit of irony and a heaping helping of sexual tension to make it distinctly her own. There are a lot of cover bands out there, and the superstar lineup (which includes guitarist Guy Stevens, filmmaker Joey Garfield, bassist Molly R. Stern, and drummer Peter Yanowitz) doesn't make Hand of Doom any more important, or better, than the rest. It is Auf Der Maur herself who is the very key to the album, because she does the one thing least expected of an Osbourne cover band: she makes Black Sabbath sexy. Cooing about mass destruction one moment, while delicately mourning lost loves the next, she tears open the mythos behind Black Sabbath and drags out the band's human element, which has rarely been emphasized. Auf Der Maur may not take the same attitude toward the material as Osbourne did, but she understands that his power hinged on the way he sounded when personally affected by the song's topics. In her own twisted, ironic way, she almost seems like the devilish flip side to Osbourne's preachy wail; it's like she invites his "death and hatred to mankind" ethos and could care less about warning the listener. It may not have been her intention (to be honest, it all sounds like drunken fun more than anything), but it is her potent personality that transforms Live in Los Angeles into the cocky slab of heavy rock that it is. To add a final touch of levity, a guest appearance from Queens of the Stone Age vocalist Nick Oliveri provides "The Mob Rules" with every bit of Dungeons and Dragons drama that Ronnie James Dio brought to ...

| | Margaret Carlson Once In A Blue Moon CD (2001)
Sheol songs
$16.49 With crisp, catchy, intelligent arrangements by Frank Mantooth, Kansas City vocalist Margaret Carlson floats through a play list of 13 familiar standards and traditional pop tunes. This album was originally issued in 1996, but was refurbished for re-release in 2001.Carlson possesses a strong (but controlled) seasoned set of pipes as distinguished from the light voice of a naïve ingénue. Her personal vocal style marries the best of cabaret and jazz singing. The storytelling faculty of the former meshes nicely with the strong musicality of the latter. This expressive ability brings to each song an outlet for the emotions embedded in each of the tunes on the program. Her interpretation of "You Don't Know What Love Is" is poignant and yearning, at the same time accusatory that anyone could fail to understand the strong feelings which create the basis for love. Of the many outstanding tracks the CD offers, "That's All" is one that stands a jot above the others. Accompanied by mercurial fluting by Kim Park, Carlson takes this oft-played standard on an exciting up-tempo roller-coaster ride. On the Doris Day-made-famous ...
