(1 Customer Review)
Hella's abrasive and violent attack on predictability continued with the impressive and brief Bitches Ain't Shit But Good People EP, the band's debut on Seattle's Suicide Squeeze Records. After the loopy and exhaustingly short "Ho's in the House," Hella offers up a layered blitzkrieg of violent notes on the seven-plus minute title track, which unfolds into a chaotic festival of noise. "Rich Kid" is a staggering whirlwind of guitars, drums, and assorted programmed sounds, while "Elkan Since Republic of R+B" features the first vocals ever on a Hella track. D. Elkan vocalizes remarkable well over the musical discord, while guitarist Spencer Seim and drummer Zach Hill perform more of their arresting brand of experimental, impossible-to-classify brand of rock. The disc whetted the appetites of listeners until the band's next full-length. ~ Stephen Cramer
Hella: Spencer Seim (guitar, programming); Zach Hill (drums).

$9.15 Take the more insanely violent elements of hardcore and death metal, throw in a few Moogs, put them into a blender, speed up the rmps as high as they'll go, and out comes the Locust. Granted, that's an oversimplification, but it works. The Atari Teenage Riot for ...
| | Hella Hold Your Horse Is CD (2002)
Bitches Ain't Shit But Good People music CDs
$12.55 Very few groups have the ability to pull off instrumentals as abstract, as unforgettably chaotic, or as decidedly original as does Hella. The spazz-core style contained within the nine tracks of Hold Your Horse Is is a beauty to behold, yet is certainly not for the meek or close-minded. It should be known that these nine songs are purely instrumentals, that no vocalization is needed, and that no matter what you have heard before, Hella is bound to make an impression you won't soon forget. The enjoyable cataclysm of sound seems to come from a whole orchestra of musicians, yet this wild album was in fact created by only two people, Spencer Selm and Zach Hill. Drawing on classic rock, jazz, electronica, and hundreds of other influences that would take too long to list, Hella has perhaps outdone itself, as Hold Your Horse Is happens to be an album there simply could never be a sequel to. Those familiar with the progressive ...
| | Hella Total Bugs Bunny On Wild Bass CD (2003)
Bitches Ain't Shit But Good People songs
$7.95 A press release that Narnack Records sent out with Hella's Total Bugs Bunny on Wild Bass jokingly says: "Total Bugs begs the question: are these f*ckers human? Probably not. But whatever they are, people love 'em." Those comments were Narnack's humorous way of informing listeners that the instrumental work of guitarist Spencer Seim and drummer Zach Hill -- collectively Hella -- shouldn't be judged by mainstream standards. Hella's bizarre, oddball, highly eccentric blend of avant-garde noise rock and electronica shouldn't be judged by the same standards one would apply to No Doubt, Creed, Shakira, or ...

| | John Stein Green Street CD (1999)
Bitches Ain't Shit But Good People music CDs
$10.15 For his second album, guitarist John Stein has taken his regular band into the studio for a session focusing on Stein originals with one standard included, Duke Ellington's "Do Nothing `Till You Hear from Me." The trio is augmented on four tracks by David "Fathead" Newman, including on the aforementioned Ellington tune. Here, Newman uses the alto instead of his regular tenor. The result is a slightly more boppish sound in lieu of the soul he gets with the tenor. Stein's group is an organ trio, and one that avoids the soul/blues/R&B trap that so often happens with these combos. One reason the undertaking is successful is because Ken Clark's organ does not dominate the proceedings but shares the headlines with Stein and often takes on a supportive role. This relationship ...

| | Joan Kurland Looking Up: Songs Of Hope And Inspiration CD (2006)
Bitches Ain't Shit But Good People songs
$15.15 Pianist-singer-songwriter Joan Kurland began her musical career at the age of five, when she begged her parents for a piano-- and knew how to play it before taking any lessons! Joan studied classical piano at the Manhattan School of Music and the Oberlin Conservatory, but her claim to fame has always been her incredible ear. Her ability to play pretty much anything she hears in any key (she has perfect pitch) makes her the ideal choice for any special event, since she doesn't need sheet music to accommodate requests. From Beethoven to the Beatles, Joan has it all in her head, ready to pull out when needed. After completing her collegiate musical studies, Joan sang and played keyboards in a highly successful Top-40 band on the East Coast. The culmination of the band's career was a performance in front of 10,000 people at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. In 1988, wanting a healthier and more spiritually oriented life, Joan left the band and fulfilled her longtime dream of moving to California. She began playing at Nordstrom, performing at parties and weddings, and teaching piano and voice. Her longtime association with the Optimum Health Institute in Lemon Grove, California, a healing center based around live foods, inspired her to start writing funny songs about the health food lifestyle. Her album of parodies, "Eat It Raw: Food, Love, and Other Disasters," with its hilarious takes on such topics as sugar addiction, singlehood, ...
