Why tamper with success? On IN THE PURSUIT OF LEISURE, Sugar Ray sticks pretty close to the style that's proven so successful for them on their previous albums; a peppy mix of ska, pop, hip-hop production techniques, and an early-'80s new wave sensibility. The latter is borne out most obviously in a lively cover version of Joe Jackson's 1979 breakthrough "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" Sugar Ray's particular mix of influences makes them spiritual kin to No Doubt, and in fact, "Mr. Bartender (It's So Easy)" sounds like a strange cross between Sweet's "Love is Like Oxygen" and the No Doubt hit "Hella Good."

While the overall feel of this album will certainly be familiar to fans, Sugar Ray has turned out a fresh batch of tunes that finds them in no real danger of repeating themselves. "Can't Start," with it's amiable folk-guitar-meets-hip-hop-beat feel, is probably the closest thing here to the band's own hit "Every Morning." As long as there are summertime beach parties, barbecues, and the like, there will be a place for the sunny, good-time sound of Sugar Ray.

4 stars Mellowed tunes, but you can still bop your head
Sugar Ray's newest album in 2 years, "In the Pursuit of Leisure," takes more than one listening to appreciate its tunes. For fans of their harder music of the 90s, this album's mellowness can take a bit of adjusting. Each song is good and catchy; I can easily see every song becoming a single. There's a remake of "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" that will make you jump up and down as you sing the lyrics out loud. The first single, "Mr. Bartender (It's So Easy)," will stick in your head and make you dance all day. Once again, Sugar Ray has shown great talent with its exceptional lyrics and memorable lines. You'll be left dancing and hitting "replay" by the time you reach the end of this CD.

5 stars unique
once again sugar ray has produced an album with its own distinct flare. all of sugar ray's cds have their own uniqueness to it, and considering this is the fifth album, one may have feared that the albums individuality may have been threatened. however the band soothes any fears quickly. the cd featuring shaggy in one song, has several different sounds to it...some tracks are fluffier than others, some more of the rock genre, and some even cross into a hip hop vibe. this is a definet listen for the summer, and if you dont have the album, you are missing out.

2 stars and that rating's just from the samples
i probably don't have the right to say this, but far as these samples go, this album seems to be about as enjoyable as eating slop. maybe it's because i like their old stuff better, i don't know. the only songs that appeal to me are Mr Bar Tender and Is She Really Going out with Him oh and Chacing you around and possibly that skit Bring me the head of... but otherwise, everything else seems pretty crap to put it politely, and that, coming from tallent like Sugar Ray is actually really sad. i've heard them at their best back on albums like Lemonade and Brownies, Floored and 14:59 and thought i'd heard them at their worst on Sugar Ray, but this album is one of those throw away titles. nothing on here has substance save for the main hits, and that includes In through the Doggy door which is the lamest excuse for a rock song i think i've ever heard, especially from sugar ray! i'll still get this, but only cos i have their other albums.

5 stars great cd
Surprised and excited to discover I love this cd. It came out a while ago and I'm just buying it now - shouldn't have waited so long. I was expecting two good songs, but adore them all! Heaven and Photograph of You are excellent! Thanks boys! I look forward to their new release in May - I promise to buy that one in a timely fashion!
