Stéphane Pompougnac's third installment of the his Costes series of mix sessions is strong in track selection and gradually makes a smooth transition into seamless mixes. At first, Costes, Vol. 3 starts off with a chunky mix of songs, and leaves one dreading that the rest of the album will be the same. Gradually Pompougnac shakes off the style and moves on to smoother mixes of foreign language and house-based tunes. With its quirky track selection, the album does nicely as an upbeat lounge compilation or a soothing downtempo house mix. ~ Diana Potts

With its seething, laid-back funk beats and steamy lyrics full of obvious references to romantic trysts, it doesn't get any sexier than Brian Culbertson's IT'S ON TONIGHT. A number of prominent crossover jazz artist lend their talents here. For example, the downtempo title track features a sensual R&B vocal from singer Will Downing. Later, saxophonist Boney James' mellifluous lines become the focus of "The Way You Feel." On "Secret Affair," relative newcomer Chris Botti plays Miles Davis-influenced riffs over a spacious one-chord vamp (and his use of a Harmon mute creates that smoky, late-night effect).
Kirk Whalum's silky tenor saxophone beautifully complements Patti Austin's soulful voice on "Love Will Never Let You Down," a seductive ballad about love's resilience. Only three singles sprang from the release of From Here to Eternally (1979) and Love Trippin' (1980) combined, so this two-fer is hardly a musical powerball. It's not remotely close to their early-'70s LPs, with the unpredictable Philippe Wynne leading the charge and producer Thom Bell in a zone. Wynne's gone; his replacement, John Edwards, a seasoned soul singer, does an admirable job. "Cupid"/"I Loved You For a Long Time" was the Spinners' last significant hit before becoming pop Top 40 nonfactors. A second single, "Now That You're Mine Again," went unnoticed, and the third, "I Just Want to Fall in Love," gets more plays via Internet Real Audio and Window Media than it did when Atlantic Records released it. Bell relies on Bobbie Smith's light tenor and Henry Fambrough's pleasant but colorless tenor for too many leads; after too many doses of them you welcome Edwards' biting, expressive full-bodied vocals with open ears. Other than the previously mentioned singles and "Streetwise," "Love Trippin'," and "Split Decision" (on which Pervis Jackson's bass is unleashed), there's nothing else among the 18 tracks you'll want to hear twice. ~ Andrew Hamilton
