Even as the band was helping to define the basic tenets of the newly born doom/death metal movement, Halifax, England's Paradise Lost was already evolving at a fast clip. The group's second, aptly titled album, Gothic, though a perfectly logical step in retrospect, seemed at the time of its release like something of a departure for the band's earliest fans. This perception was largely enforced by the less deliberate, more energetic arrangements given songs like "Dead Emotion" and "Shattered," not to mention Paradise Lost's slightly cleaner approach to guitar crunch. Further standouts such as the title track, "Eternal," and "The Painless" also made cautious use of keyboards and even female vocals, which together added atmospheric nuances to the group's ultra-depressive power chords. Gaining in confidence, young vocalist Nick Holmes' growling style was still utterly unmusical here, but at least he was making himself heard over the band's monolithic din. His lyrics were also becoming increasingly more mature, and this maturity would help push Paradise Lost ahead of its demon-obsessed competitors with each subsequent album. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Exodus Bonded By Blood CD (1985)
Gothic CD music
$7.29 Had it been released immediately after it was recorded in 1984, Exodus' Bonded by Blood might be regarded today alongside Metallica's Kill 'em All as one of the landmark albums responsible for launching the thrash metal wave. But by the time it finally hit the streets more than a year later due to numerous record company-related difficulties, the genre the band helped spawn had evolved at an alarming rate (again, largely thanks to the unstoppable Metallica) and Exodus were left to wonder what kind of impact they may have had without these setbacks. Opening with the mind-blowing power of title track, the band immediately pummels through a number of astounding thrashers, including "And Then There Were None" and, perhaps their best well-known track, "A Lesson in Violence" -- a veritable handbook for thrash etiquette. Though less enduring, "Metal Command" ...
| | Judas Priest Painkiller CD (1990) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Gothic music CDs
$6.75 Judas Priest's 1990 release, PAINKILLER, shows the band returning to ferocious metal after such musical detours as 1986's TURBO. It also proved to be the British band's last outing with original singer Rob Halford. Drummer Scott Travis (ex-Racer X) makes his Priest debut here, while the sound and songwriting is comparable to thrash/speed metal.
The album-opening title track is one of Priest's heaviest and greatest songs (brace yourself before it kicks in!), and the band takes no prisoners on such titles as "Hell Patrol" and "A Touch of Evil." An inspired way to close out Halford-era Priest.
At the dawn of the '90s, Judas Priest were in sad shape: out of touch, seemingly creatively bankrupt, coming off the two worst albums of their career, and left for dead by many observers. Trying to right the ship, Priest jettisoned longtime producer Tom Allom and ...
| | Paradise Lost Symbol Of Life CD (2002)
Gothic songs
$10.19 Though the relative merits of Paradise Lost's bizarre transformation from heavier-than-God doom/death metal originators to an alternative rock act delving into gothic electronica remain locked in a fierce debate, there's no sense ignoring two unmistakable facts. First, the band had clearly reached the end of its original direction's tether with 1995's Draconian Times, which, despite its success with fans and solid songs, was little more than a retread of the band's previous album, and arguably career-apex, Icon. Second, while their subsequent sonic experiments have often resembled nothing more than a slightly heavier version of Depeche Mode (complete with singer Nick Holmes adopting a very David Gahan-esque, deadened baritone), the band has proved ...

| | Ocean Aeolian CD (2006)
Gothic CD music
$10.19 The Swedish metal band the Ocean's ambitious collection of intense, monolithic music is made more user-friendly by the inclusion of a half-dozen guest vocalists, including the former Coalesce singer Sean Ingram and Converge's Nate Newton. With less emphasis on the complexities of the band's previous FOGDIVER, AEOLIAN is a gripping, undeviating set of heavy metal.
"Aeolian" is the heavier twin of the 2004 release "Fluxion". Both albums were recorded in one long session, which lasted from January 2004 until July 2005, in the ...
