Indian percussionist and composer Karsh Kale's second effort for the Six Degrees label offers further evidence that the man is simply incapable of producing a boring album. On Realize, his full-length debut (not counting his many remix credits and studio appearances with such artists as Sting, Bill Laswell, and Herbie Hancock), Kale promiscuously blended electronica, classical Indian music, and rock & roll, and he does so again on Liberation. But he avoids repeating himself by incorporating orchestral strings on several tracks (courtesy of the Madras Chamber Orchestra) and by refining his approach somewhat, doing more with fewer musical elements. The neat and tidy jungle beats, distorto bass, and melismatic female vocals on "Instinct" may not be exceptionally innovative, but they sure work well, and the incongruously titled "Dirty Fellow" is both melodically sweet and headbangingly funky. The album's two highlight tracks are "Milan," which cleverly blends tabla, flute, funky drumming, and strings to create something that sounds very much like what Bill Laswell is often trying for and frequently missing on his own worldbeat experiments, and "Epic," which closes the album with a lush and gorgeous soundscape over which funk beats are layered episodically. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

Liberation CD music
$9.15 Principally recorded at Mighty Junn, Kampo Studios, New York, New York; Midival, Julius Packiam Studios, New Delhi, India.
Fusing electronica with traditional Indian music, Karsh Kale takes on a different approach than Bill Laswell and Zakir Hussain did on their Tala Matrix album (a disc which Kale contributed to). Where Laswell and Hussain built on the traditional hypnotism of Indian music, Kale fuses it with a melodic pop sensibility that, unfortunately, deadens much of the beauty of the sound and delivers it from the magical patience that tabla music is often infused with. ...

#1 is the sound of 1980 as filtered by two new wave revivalists in 2002. The nine songs here have been remastered and resequenced from Casey Spooner and Warren Fischer's original take on a debut (released in 2001 on International DJ Gigolos). Though they're known primarily for their campy, elaborate live-concerts-as-dramas, Fischerspooner prove themselves to be as talented working studio boards as they are at staging those Ziggy Stardust-style freakouts. Many listeners will be surprised by the emotional depth of the album, especially since most will have been introduced first to the ravey "Emerge." Their cover ...
| | Mammals Departure CD (2006)
Liberation music CDs
$13.89 The Mammals have always prided themselves on "broadening the boundaries of folk." This has been apparent in their first two releases, Evolver and Rock That Babe, both of which retain a healthy folk sound while gently exploring other musical realms. Departure, however, takes the idea of broadening to an entirely different level. The title of the album was clearly not chosen haphazardly. The songs on this latest release by the quintet reach to the far borders of folk music, perhaps even past them, into the pastures of blues, rock, modern country, pop, even jazz. The album begins with an almost Police-like pop song, "Follow Me to Carthage," a criticism of contemporary American government and its mass media that avoids proselytization and condescension while still making its point. The theme of politics is prevalent on Departure, as it also is on the other Mammals albums, but the songs themselves are so strong as whole entities that this doesn't weigh the record down. The first actual "folk" song is four tracks deep, and delves into the hidden costs of war, and though the simple two-lined chorus, "Alone on the homestead/With the bones of the fallen dead," is sung in harmony, it seems lonelier with two than if it had been sung by just one person. The cover of León Gieco's "Sólo le Pido a Dios" is very similar to the original, which makes sense -- Gieco had performed with banjo player and vocalist Tao Rodriguez-Seeger's grandfather Pete -- and hauntingly beautiful, asking for the strength to avoid indifference. The other covers on the album (Morphine's "Do Not Go Quietly Unto Your Grave," Nirvana's "Come as You Are," and Porter Wagoner's "Satisfied Mind") ...
