| | El Pueblo Unido CD Quilapayun Discography of CDs
The socially concious Chilean group Quilapayun have been around since the mid-'60s. This collection shows the group's fierce political commitment through music.
The Chilean group formed in 1965 writing lyrics inspired by social issues related to its country and combining them with autochthonous musical arrangements. In 1966, the band came in first place at the Festival de Festivales, releasing its first album that same year. Folk singer and songwriter Victor Jara helped the band by promoting Quilapayun's music and making the record Canciones Folkloricas de America together. As Chilean New Song's ambassador, Quilapayun went on its first European tour in 1968. Due to Chilean political and social changes in the early '70s, the group settled in foreign countries for more than a decade. El Pueblo Unido Songs | 1. | Comienza la Vida Nueva |

$16.59 Daniel Buckley, Tucson Citizen: "2003 TOP TEN: Een is a graceful musician and a conjuring compositional alchemist whose music...never sounds anything shy of original and inviting."Kyle Gann, Village Voice: "Suavely post-minimalist music [that] could engage any audience. Rarely is new music this much fun." His music for dance has been praised by Jack Anderson in the New York Times and by Deborah Jowitt in the Village Voice, who wrote that Een's "lively, raucous and sweet music... is a marvel and full of variety."The music on this CD reflects influences from such diverse sources as the fall of the Berlin Wall, traditional Japanese court music, subterranean Roman baths in England, and a walking journey in Tibet.Meredith Monk remarks that "Mystery Dances is like a musical caravan drawing upon traditions from Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. The music is energetic, filled with contrasting moods of humor and poignancy."Known for his use of extended vocal and cello techniques, ...
