The '90s seemed to have been the decade of lo-fi meets high profile, but once the hype goes, the music remains and, in the right hands, finds sharp new practitioners. Thus Elephant Micah, real name Joe O'Connell, whose third full album (counting the very limited CD-Rom release Untied States of Elephant Micah) is an hour-long meditation in the form. By which is meant: recorded at home, guitar-based, soft wheezing keyboards, reflective and sometimes melancholic lyrics, with singing to match. Part of the appeal after a slew of such releases in past years is contextual, admittedly -- after the rise in popularity of essentially one-man-bands like Dashboard Confessional and Bright Eyes, it's nice to hear someone take things in a more cryptic and somewhat less strident vein. Also, for all the complaints about fetishizing such recording as an end to itself, as opposed to simply a cheap medium, there's no denying both the appeal of murkily beautiful arrangements ("Turned Up the Stardom" and "Flannery's Frizzled Chicken"), and the production to make things even more so. O'Connell himself aims for a gentle variety in turn -- "Rhode Island Reds" and "Immune to Amusement" have fuller arrangements, including drums, that cut through just a touch more strongly, while "A Vocabulary" has a distinctly clear and crisp quality to it. It's also interesting hearing slightly unexpected parallels creep through, most specifically plenty of country slide guitar (but without the alt country atmosphere per se -- the banjo on the slyly titled "Mt. Neil Young" comes close, though). The lazy, drowsy guitar and general pace on "Deliver Us From Broken Glass" calls to mind Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You," one of the album's nicest touches. It's not a perfect album through and through -- some of the songs feel a bit too laid-back and minimal, nice enough sketches that don't quite resolve. But Your Dreams Are Feeding Back is still an enjoyable listen. ~ Ned Raggett

Elephant Micah, Your Dreams Are Feeding Back album
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian ...

Elephant Micah, Your Dreams Are Feeding Back CD music
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. ...

| | Local H As Good As Dead CD (1996)
Elephant Micah, Your Dreams Are Feeding Back songs
$7.79 Of the dozens of grunge (or "heavy alternative") bands that emerged in the wake of Nirvana's success, one of the few that managed anything close to Kurt Cobain's emotional resonance was Local H. Just as much of Nirvana's early material was informed by Cobain's experiences growing up as a misfit in blue-collar Aberdeen, WA, Local H's Scott Lucas spun a loose concept album out of life in Zion, IL, a dead-end town in the industrial Midwest, for the group's second disc, As Good as Dead. Though Cobain's artier ambitions added an oddball sonic undertow to his neo-Sabbath dropped chords, Lucas' tastes obviously run to meat-and-potatoes hard rock, with just enough of a melody line to give you something to hum while you bang your head. But while Lucas has the guitar (and bass) style of a rock dude, like Cobain, he has the soul ...

Elephant Micah, Your Dreams Are Feeding Back CD music
$15.19 No one could have imagined back in the fall of 1971 when two teenage boys met that it would have evolved quite like this. Glen “Sargent” Granthem and Keith Smith went to high school together, but didn’t actually meet up until Glen started dating Keith’s sister. Once the common musical interest was established, the next 10 years would be theres for the taking. They played in numerous bands together, whether it be classic rock or club music, but what they enjoyed doing the most was to write and record original music together. This is when The Sargent Smith Band was born. They recorded their first efforts at Glen’s house on a two track tape recorder. They advanced into ...
