Jerry Douglas sure can play the dobro. As the world's undisputed premier dobro player, Douglas has played with just about everybody. And, as would befit somebody with that kind of distinction, his playing is utterly virtuosic. The only question left, then, is what he wants to do with it. On Lookout for Hope, Douglas' fifth release for Sugar Hill, Douglas delivers up his usual newgrass, accompanied by some of the usual newgrass heavyweights, including Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, and Jeff Coffin. Maura O'Connell, James Taylor, and Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio turn in appearances as well. Douglas tries to do a lot. "Patrick Meets the Brickbats and "Cave Bop," for example, show off his lightning-fast playing. They are dazzling displays, but ultimately none too satisfying. Douglas does far better in milking the slow, bittersweet tones of the instrument, such as he does on a cover of Duane Allman's "Little Martha." The ten-minute title track (and album centerpiece), penned by jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, is most intriguing, combining Middle Eastern-sounding scales (such as on David Grisman's "Arabia" opus) with resonant and percussive acoustic sounds. As the master of the instrument, Douglas can do pretty much whatever he wants. Lookout for Hope does not find him resting on his laurels. Instead, he explores a variety of settings and moods, all bound together with the distinctive sound of his instrument. ~ Jesse Jarnow

| Lookout For Hope Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Dobro Douglas fully delivers the goods! Dobro Douglas dazzles us again with his new release, "Lookout For Hope," an evocative new acoustic offering that blends influences of bluegrass, jazz, classical and Celtic music. Full of excitement and energy, the music on this album is a real kick in the pants. The opening cut, an arrangement of Duane Allman's "Little Martha" features just dobro and bass (played by Barry Bales). "Patrick Meet the Brickbats" hits the bluegrass bull's eye dead on, with Douglas ably assisted by Bryan Sutton (guitar), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Sam Bush (mandolin), Barry Bales (bass), and Larry Atamanuik (drums). If one is going to have drums on their acoustic project, Atamanuik is the one who can tastefully play them. A real treat are the vocals of Maura O'Connell on "Footsteps Fall." Following a too-short interlude of "Monkey Let The Hogs Out," Douglas launches into the 10-minute jazzy title cut with Sutton, Bush, Chris Thile on mandolin, Byron House on bass, and Trey Anastasio on guitar. This aqueous composition will give you hint as to how Jerry Douglas earned his nickname of "Flux." A little sax, electric guitar, and drums are flavorfully added to provide an artistic interpretation to the hard-driving Douglas original, "Cave Bop." These instruments really spice up this project and tickle the musical palate, if your tastebuds are open to such things. In keeping with the flow, "The Wild Rumpus" and "The Sinking Ship" provide up-tempo and moderate jazz offerings. Jerry takes a 2-minute freewheeling solo on "In The Sweet By and By," and the project closes with James Taylor singing "The Suit." If one were to view this Jerry Douglas CD as an entire package, it would be a prize one that fully delivers the goods. | | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Lookout For Hope CD music
$16.65 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and ...
| | Thelonious Monk Straight, No Chaser (1967)
Lookout For Hope music CDs
$18.55 This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
"I'm famous, ain't that a bitch." Thus opens the soundtrack of the only documentary on the life of Thelonious Sphere Monk. Monk is an immensely important figure in 20th century music, not only as a virtuoso jazz pianist, but also one of the most innovative composers of any musical form. Although far from comprehensive, the soundtrack nevertheless achieves a satisfying cross-section of Monk tunes, from the infectious clunkiness of "Pannonica" and "Trinkle, Tinkle" to the painfully beautiful blue tones of the aptly named "Ugly Beauty."
Interspersed with narration, as well as unreleased rehearsals and snatches of unguarded conversation gathered during the making of the film, these selections do an admirable job of capturing the complexity of Monk's life and music in fairly limited space. The biographical data provided in the narration, along with the accessible selections, makes the soundtrack an excellent introduction to Monk's larger body of work, while the inclusion of out-takes and audio snapshots of the man himself makes STRAIGHT NO CHASER desirable even to Monk connoisseurs.
This CD reissue of one of Thelonious Monk's most accessible (and commercially successful) albums differs greatly from the 1967 LP. Besides previously unavailable takes of Duke Ellington's "I ...

Four years since 1997's East West, Fordham has had plenty of time to experience love's greatest fun and fears, but with time on her hands to perfect something more personal. Concrete Love is probably her most stripped album since 1989's Porcelain, and Fordham's honeyed, dark, four-octave ...

| | Lauren White At Last CD (2007) Sacd Hybrid
Lookout For Hope songs
$22.85 Lauren White is one of a seemingly increasing number of vocalists attempting to follow in the footsteps of the highly successful vocalist Norah Jones. Though White has got some jazz chops and a pleasing voice, her debut CD is rather inconsistent, covering standards, pop songs, country and originals. The best tracks feature her with pianist Bill Cunliffe (who knows a thing or two about accompanying singers), while bassist Chuck Berghofer and drummer Mark Ferber lay a solid foundation ...
