(1 Customer Review)
BLUES SINGER won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. Going beyond the stripped-down arrangements of 2001's SWEET TEA, Buddy Guy picks up an acoustic guitar to cut a record that comes across as an off-the-cuff homage ... Full Descriptionto mentor Muddy Waters, whose similar 1963 outing FOLK SINGER featured Guy's guitar work. From the minute this Mississippi native affects a falsetto on Skip James's "Hard Time Killing Floor," neck hairs remain standing on end for the better part of BLUES SINGER.
The remainder of these dozen carefully selected tracks find the blues legend rifling through the canons of favorites like Robert Nighthawk (a loping "Anna Lee"), Willie Dixon (the brash "I Live the Life I Love"), and Johnny Shines (a spirited "Moanin' and Groanin'"). Eric Clapton joins in for a tasty take on Frankie Sims' "Lucy Mae Blues" and B.B. King makes three for an acoustic blues summit on John Lee Hooker's seminal "Crawlin' Kingsnake." Though far from the raucous outings fans have come to expect, this collection of acoustic blues is a creative success and yet another stellar addition to Guy's already impressive discography.
Recorded at Sweet Tea, Oxford, Mississippi.

Uncut (11/03, p.107) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Guy sounds simply magnificent, whether he's high and haunting on 'Hard Time Killing Floor' or deep and sonorous on 'Crawlin' King Snake'..." Living Blues (11/03, p.69) - "...He doesn't need anyone's help to make this disc a masterpiece - he takes care of that on his own..." Blues Singer album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Blues Singer CD music
$10.15 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time and featuring 'One Way Out,' 'It's My Own Fault' ...

| | Eric Clapton Me And Mr. Johnson CD (2004)
Blues Singer songs
$10.65 Applying liberal amounts of slide and fuzz guitar, this English rock legend saunters along fare such as "Traveling Riverside Blues" and "Love in Vain," time-honored Johnson classics better known through renditions by Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, respectively. Portnoy's unobtrusive harp provides subtle accompaniment to Clapton's heartfelt playing, be it the swirling dirge "Hell Hound on My Trail" or the harmony-soaked "Come on in My Kitchen." The proceedings are also enhanced by the Hammond organ and piano work of sideman Billy Preston, whose trips up and down the eighty-eights give added punch to songs like the rollicking "32-20 ...
| | Buddy Guy Bring 'Em In CD (2005)
Blues Singer album
$15.65 Buddy Guy's 2005 release, BRING 'EM IN, has--for better and worse--all the trappings of a "music's elder statesman" album. In the tradition of seasoned professionals entering the glorious autumn of their careers, Buddy Guy has invited lots of guests to play on a record filled with well-worn chestnuts. With the exception of one tune by Guy ("What Kind of Woman is This"), the majority of the set comprises R&B classics by Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, Wilson Pickett, and Eddie Floyd.
John Mayer appears ...
