| | George Benson Livin' Inside Your Love CD (1979)
Piano Foreplay
$7.59 And why should the guy live on what the average jazzman makes if they'll pay him to surround himself with strings and keep the tunes simple? Twenty years ago, fans of Benson's tough, muscular synthesis of bop, blues and post-bop ideas screamed "sellout" over his success with "On Broadway" and "This Masquerade." Today we know better, because we have another name for it--smooth jazz.
George Benson plays the guitar so well that jazz ...

| | Paul Bley Open, To Love CD (1973) (Import) Japan; Reissue
Piano Foreplay
$44.15 This 1972 solo piano album is one of Paul Bley's best--and this from a man who has made many excellent recordings. Beautiful in its brevity, the album is decorated with pieces that evoke the French composers Milhaud and Satie (though Bley is far more obtuse). Three compositions are by Carla Bley, two are by Annette Peacock (his first and second wives, respectively), and another two are by Bley himself. This is a perfectly balanced set. The pieces all ring with chamber-like clarity.
Carla Bley's inventive melodicism ...
| | Done Been Gettin' To It CD (2006)
Piano Foreplay
$10.65 Anyone who knows the Minneapolis music scene knows that it is a deep pocket of talent tucked unassumingly in the upper Midwest. Done Been, a project recorded by Sean Behling (Sax/Production), Rob Dewey (Keys), and Zack Lozier (Trumpet), proves once again this town turns out music that is unique and inspired. As evident in the playing on the album, these musicians have developed chemistry playing together in different groups/settings since 1998. Eleven instrumental tracks on the album showcase these musicians performing ten original pieces and a cover of T. Monk’s “Epistrophy.” These pieces arranged mostly by Behling feature group interplay, soulful improvisation, and compositions diverse in style. Collaborations with DJ Detalx, and MCs Crescent Moon, Advizer and Doug Kearney show an interesting synthesis as the vocalists and musicians comp eachother while working the beat. Together the layers of live horns and keys blend seamlessly into sample based backdrops coupling to create an earnest, organic quality that is at times hypnotic and strikingly real. The beats, composed of thick, dusty samples, often juxtapose tight drums against sly loping rhythms in the vein of traditional jazz style drumming ripe with finesse and intricate brush work. This contrast brings the element of dynamics back into ...

| | Junebug Spade CD (2008)
Piano Foreplay
$6.39 File under: Party-rock, Stoner-pop, Wild-art-rock, but NEVER confuse Junebug Spade as this year’s new hipster version of local gods The Flaming Lips. Hailing from their shared hometown of Oklahoma City, some upcoming bands find it difficult to break free from the obvious musical association. Not a problem for Junebug Spade. With a bent toward the psychedelic and those beloved rock and indie bands of youth (Pixies, Velvet Underground, Rolling Stones), ringleader Peter Seay set out to record an album of wild rock and unexpected song structures. The band features some of Oklahoma’s most creative musicians, known more for their off-beat sensibilities than for their conventional indie aesthetic. The self-titled EP—their first release—was recorded between Seay’s home and Bell Labs (home of go-to indie producer and former Chainsaw Kittens guitarist, Trent Bell). The six quirky (yet existential), college-radio-bound party tunes, blend the enthusiasm and curiousity of the Kinks and Cake with the melodies of Built to Spill and classic Jagger/Richards riffs. As local darlings, the OKC Arts Council has given the band the coveted ...
