Released right after the career albums TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT and ZUMA and right before the big-selling COMES A TIME and RUST NEVER SLEEPS, this country-rocky 1977 album is often forgotten. But it introduced the sensational "Like A Hurricane," which has remained a staple of Young's concerts, and such quirky favorites as "Homegrown," an ode to marijuana, and "Old Country Waltz," which is exactly what it says it is. As Neil Young's legendary 1970s albums go, it might be a bit of a tossed-off affair, but most country-rockers can only dream of making one album this good.
2003 remastered reissue of 1977 album. This roots 'n' rock album features guests, Emmylou Harris & Linda Ronstadt, & the fan favorite 'Like A Hurricane'. The album initially peaked at #21 & achieved gold status. Nine tracks. Reprise.

I bought this album originally on vinyl when it was first released and then lost it in a divorce. I always wanted it back and when it was finally released on cd, I bought it. I bought it the first time because I had heard "Like a Hurricane" and loved it, but the second time around I needed to hear "Hold Back the Tears" and "Hey Babe" again, because you're never going to hear them on an oldies station or FM radio. Some of Neil's best country rock.

I've been wanting to get this disc on cd for so long. Always one of my top 5 Neil Young discs. Great melodies, rockabilly guitar licks and fun songs. It was vintage Neil in a happier time. If you haven't heard it, it's definitely worth a listen.

The direction of this album is a little
hodge podge. It has a country feel with "Bite the Bullet" "Saddle up the Palomino" and "Homegrown". It also has a classic electic song "Like a Hurricane". This album should be bought on the strenth of one song "Will to Love". It is so powerful and romantic that it will floor you.

Another Seventies Holdout Makes it to CD
Quirky, country-ish. Singularly iconoclastic for its time AS&B is a patchwork of Neil's mid-seventies hubrus.
Known for including "Like A Hurricane", AS&B has much more to offer. "Hold Back The Tears", "Saddle Up The Palamino", and "Hey Babe" reflect the out there seventies ethos. Sounds much better on CD than vinyl.

A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded ...

After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal.
