Recorded at the last stop on their 2002 tour, Alive in Seattle documents an impeccable performance and production, mixed for surround-sound playback on both regular and Super Audio CD formats. A warm artist/audience vibe permeates this set; it's easy to imagine families sprawled out on an amphitheater lawn, taking in the music on an early summer evening. All that's missing is any sense of urgency. The musicians hit every note flawlessly -- too flawlessly, perhaps. Ann Wilson hints at the problem in the album notes, where she describes bandmember Ben Smith's transformation from "studio cat to being a real rock & roll drummer." In fact, some element of "studio cat" dispassion colors these performances; even the sisterly banter between tracks seems forced, if not, in their spoken prelude to "Magic Man," slightly condescending. Ultimately it's Ann Wilson who brings each track home, with a vocal delivery that never lacks soul. On their cover of "Black Dog" she even challenges Robert Plant's original rendition, more than holding her own on high notes, power, and drama. On balance, that's enough to recommend Alive in Seattle, lack of warts and all. ~ Robert L. Doerschuk

A strong set from start to finish . . . . This release documents the final stop on the Wilson sister's 2002 tour and what a show. From the first song, "Crazy on You" to the closing "Dreamboat Annie" both from the "Dreamboat Annie" album, Heart delivers the goods. As you can see from the setlist the CD covers the highlights of their catalog with a few new songs from an upcoming new album that should come out in 2004. The new songs rock although "Break the Rock" might be a turn-off for some of the die-hard Heart fans. Highlights include a cover of Elton John's "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" and Zep's "Battle of Evermore." Ann sounds and looks just great. Nancy gives one hundred percent and really works the stage. The sound on this disc is wonderful. I would recommend before you purchase the SACD version to look for the DVD release of the same show. It is presented in 5.1 and I was very happy to see the concert was presented in widescreen format as well. If you do not have the DVD capability then pick up the CD, you will be happy you did. Major highlights for me, a fan of Heart since 1976, is the inclusion of "Mistral Wind" and "Love Alive". MADDOG gives it 5 Bones. DARK SIDE OF THE MOON was a benchmark record. It turned the musical world on its ear with a hitherto unseen combination of sounds, and changed things considerably for Pink Floyd. For this project, Pink Floyd resurrected older and unfinished numbers, some of which came from the multitude of soundtracks the band members had previously worked on. The film ZABRISKIE POINT, a study of American materialism from a foreigner's perspective, provided "Us and Them" (originally titled "The Violence Sequence"). Waters rewrote "Breathe" after its appearance on his and avant-garde composer Ron Geesin's score for THE BODY, a surreal medical documentary.

| | Alberta Adams Detroit Is My Home CD (2008)
Alive In Seattle CD music
$16.45 Alberta has long been the undisputed queen of the blues here in Detroit. She started as a dancer in the late 1940's and has been doing it ever since. Along the way she toured with T-Bone Walker, Louis Jordan, Cleanhead Vinson and even played the Apollo Theater with Dizzy Gillespie. It is amazing that a woman born in 1917 is still out there doing it and doing with power. She continues to represent the real old school and still touring. Alberta has just completed her third CD for the Eastlawn label, called "Detroit Is My Home." On it she sings with three different and amazing pianists: Mark Braun, aka Mr. B, Al Hill (from the Bettye LeVette Band) and Ann Rabson, from Virginia. Ann is a member of Saffire, a great all female blues band that tours ...
