Personnel: Lee Konitz (alto saxophone); Elvin Jones (drums). Liner Note Authors: Lee Konitz; Nat Hentoff. Recording information: Olmsted Sound Studios, New York, NY (08/29/1961). This very spontaneous LP (altoist Lee Konitz had never played before in a trio with bassist Sonny Dallas and drummer Elvin Jones) is quite successful and enjoyable. Konitz and his trio perform five familiar standards, stretching out on such tunes as "I Remember You," "All of Me" and "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To." The music is searching but melodic, exploratory yet accessible. This is one of Konitz's better albums from the era and is long overdue to be reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow Purchase Motion CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Miles Davis In Person At The Blackhawk: Complete CDs (2003) Remastered; Box Set

$9.79 Personnel: Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone); McCoy Tyner (piano); Bob Cranshaw (bass instrument); Elvin Jones (drums). Liner Note Author: Bob Blumenthal. This early recording by Joe Henderson is not only one of the finest of all of his fine recordings, but is also a high point for 1960s jazz. At this point in his career, Henderson was a full-time member of Horace Silver's combo and did not yet have a steady band in his hire. He is joined on Inner Urge ...

Motion
$9.09 Personnel: Bob Mintzer (vocals, piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, drums, background vocals); Bob Mintzer; Tom "Bones" Malone, Tom Malone (trombone); Randy Brecker (horns); Don Grolnick (keyboards); Will Lee (electric bass); Frank Malabe, Manolo Badrena, Frank Malabé (percussion); Corey Davidson (programming); Carter Cathcarte (background vocals); Hugh McCracken, Bill Washer (guitar); Carl Poole (flute); Alan Raph (trombone); Alan Rubin, Lew Soloff (horns); Mark Gray (keyboards); Tom Barney (electric bass); Peter Erskine, Brian Brake (drums); Chuggy Carter (percussion); Lillias White (background vocals). Additional personnel: Jaco Pastorius (electric bass); Don Grolnick, Randy Brecker. Liner Note Author: Zan Stewart. Recording information: R.P.M. Studio, New York, NY (1982). Editor: Herbert Fraungruber. Photographer: Mark Millington. Saxophonist Bob Mintzer, aka "Papa Lips," has led jazz bands of varying sizes, but he is perhaps most dazzling in a small-group setting, as on this 1983 outing. In the company of legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius, equally renowned trumpeter Randy Brecker, and a host of other guest stars representing the best of the early-'80s fusion scene, Mintzer holds his ground and leads the way through a series of lively, intelligent tracks: the silky fusion of "Late Night with You," the swinging trad jazz of "Mr. Fone Bone," and the bouncy Latin number "I Don't Know." Source is Bob Mintzer's second album as a leader. Recorded in 1982 for the Cheetah label, it was previously released only in Japan. Source was recorded with an alternating larger ensemble that includes in various places keyboardists Don Grolnick and Mark Gray, guitarist Hugh McCracken, bassists Jaco Pastorius (with whom Mintzer had tenured on the Word of Mouth big band LP), and Will Lee, drummers Peter Erskine and Brian ...
| | Danny Lerman Meowbaby CD (2008)
Motion
$13.39 Meowbaby takes its retro-cool title from a line uttered by Telly Savalas in an episode of the '70s television series Kojak. It's saxophonist Danny Lerman's way of giving a playful salute on a contemporary jazz recording that is fun, funky, and full of top-flight musicians. Lerman aggressively pursues his rhythms and grooves with the kind of musicality that has been championed by the like of Dave Koz,Jimmy Sommers. and Eric Marienthal. Lerman co-wrote a dozen songs for this second album, recorded two covers including Sade's mega ...
