| | Yosvany Terry Twisted Noon CD Yosvany Terry Discography of CDs
Alto saxophonist Yosvany Terry left his native Cuba for the Bay Area and ultimately settled in New York, where he has become an important figure in the jazz scene. He has enjoyed high-profile associations with the likes of Steve Coleman, Avishai Cohen, and Jason Lindner, but he's also showing great promise as a leader. His debut disc, Twisted Noon, features his band Columna "B" as it existed back in Berkeley. The album is therefore not entirely representative of what Terry has been up to since his arrival on the East Coast. Still, it affords a good look at his advanced and uplifting musical vision, and boasts the talents of strong musicians such as pianist Roberto Carcasses, bassist/brother Yunior Terry, drummer Josh Jones, percussionist Jesus Díaz, and trombonist Marty Wehner (on half the cuts). Carcasses and Díaz share much of the writing and arranging credit with Terry, which explains why the band's name, not Terry's, appears on the outer packaging.
Scheherazade Stone's soulful vocals color two of the tracks, including a rich Latin arrangement of the standard "Tenderly." Sandy Cressman's background vocals and Díaz's captivating Spanish-language refrains serve to emphasize the multicultural thrust of Terry's music, which brings together Afro-Cuban, funk, and bebop elements. (Catch Terry's quote of "If I Should Lose You" during the closing "El Noticiero.") ~ David R. Adler

Twisted Noon album
$14.29 Not all mellow, Houston Person's tribute to the softer side of jazz has its moments based on the laid-back timbre of his soul rather than a program consisting of only ballads. The tenor sax he wields certainly reflects the tradition established by Ben Webster in its soul-drenched tone, but is not as vocally pronounced or vibrato-driven. The quite capable pianist John Di Martino is the one whose more enunciated notions are harnessed, while tasteful guitar by the underrated James Chirillo rings out in acceptance of Person's embraceable hues. In a program of standards and two blues jams, Person rounds into shape this quintet of true professionals to render themes that are harder to play slow than fast. The slower material includes the regretful, throaty ballad "Too Late ...

Twisted Noon album
$7.99 The Edgar Winter Group/Rick Derringer is a split CD featuring five songs each by the Edgar Winter Group and Rick Derringer. Often on a disc like this the two bands are thrown together with no real link between the two. In this case, however, Derringer played in Edgar Winter's band and produced his best records, so it makes perfect sense that the two are together. The five Winter songs include his two big hits, the number one smash "Frankenstein" and the AOR staple "Free Ride," and three other tunes that show off his easygoing vocals and rollicking piano. The Derringer cuts are all first-rate rockers. Of course, "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" is the best, but of the remaining four, "Teenage Love Affair" and "Let Me In" are highlights. The faux-reggae version of "Hang On Sloopy" may rub a few purists the wrong way, but it is fun. Taken together, the ten tracks here are a good, low-cost way to get the ...

Twisted Noon album
$16.45 Mike has been playing since the 1960's. That's right. Some of these protest songs were about LBJ and Vietnam. Funny, how things haven't changed. A veteran of rock, country and blues bands. Mike sat in Muddy Waters bedroom, had Buddy Guy show him around the blues clubs where Willie Dixon, Junior Wells and Mighty Joe Young among others were hanging out. A drunken Jim Morrison took a whizz on Mike's shoe. Roger Waters, Wayne 'MC5' Kramer and quite a few others have told Mike to piss off through the years. It never has stopped him from speaking his mind. The 1970's found Mike playing folk gigs at places like the Fifth Peg and Orphans in Chicago, alongside guys like Steve Goodman and John Prine. For all you alumni geeks out there,Mike was booted out of LANE TECH HIGH SCHOOL in Chicago. He finally graduated from the old CENTRAL YMCA HIGH SCHOOL that graduated neer do wells like MIKE ROYKO, MIKE BLOOMFIELD and BARRY GOLDBERG. He went to CENTRAL YMCA COMMUNITY COLLEGE for two years before graduating from the creative writing program at COLUMBIA COLLEGE. Lifelong kudos to teachers, JOHN SCHULTZ, BETTY SHIFLETT, HARRY MARK PETRAKIS and PAUL PEKIN. He founded the Record Emporium in 1979 and has been selling music continually since then. He has had stores in three states and is currently ...
