| | Cannonball Adderley In San Francisco CD (1959) SACD Hybrid
Listen Here!
$15.39 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Recorded live at The Jazz Workshop, San Francisco, California on October 18 & 20, 1959. Originally released on Riverside (1157). Includes original liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason.
Hot on the heels of session work with Miles Davis and his KIND OF BLUE-era group, alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley recorded this excellent live date with his brother, cornetist Nat Adderley, along with pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes. THE CANNONBALL ADDERLEY QUINTET IN SAN FRANCISCO defined the accessible, yet technically challenging, soul-jazz that Adderley would be associated with for the rest of his career.
The warm, exuberant feel of the quintet is especially evident on the set's two finest tracks--a spirited take on Randy Weston's "Hi-Fly," and on Timmons's swinging "This Here." Two of Adderley's own compositions, "Spontaneous Combustion" and "You Got It!," blend blazing post-bop dexterity with pulsing, infectious blues structures, ...
| | Allman Brothers Band Live At Fillmore East CDs (1971) Hybrid; SACD Hybrid; Deluxe Edition
Listen Here!
$20.35 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
The original Fillmore East album is one of the finest live documents of the rock era, capturing the original line-up of one of the '70s' tightest outfits before they were cruelly robbed of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Taken from five 1971 performances at New York's fabled Fillmore East, the extended and effortlessly melodic workouts of "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" and "Whipping Post" still have the power to rivet and move.
On display here is the Allmans' fabled chemistry at its finest. The band not only rocks, it rolls, swings, and stretches out in exploratory, jazzy passages. The dual guitar interplay of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts glides effortlessly over the propulsive rhythm section of Oakley and twin drummers Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, while Greg Allman's powerful blues voice and melodic keyboard work provides the icing on the cake. Though the later-released THE FILLMORE CONCERTS presents these songs in their original entirety, AT FILLMORE EAST, with its seamless edits of multiple performances, may be the superior recording. ...
| | Bill Evans Explorations CD (1961) SACD Hybrid
Listen Here!
$15.19 Digitally remastered by David Luke (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
EXPLORATIONS, Bill Evans' fourth solo album, is aptly named. Throughout, Evans displays the high-minded lyrical facility, long flowing phrases and rich sound that made him so popular with both fans and other musicians during the 1950s and '60s. The intrepid nature of his improvisations and the edgy interactivity of his trio echo the album's title in tracks like the expansive "Elsa," "Israel," and the Miles Davis composition "Nardis."
Evans is also a master of the ballad, and he shapes tracks such as "Haunted Heart" and the shimmering, evocative "Elsa" into exercises of grace and sensitivity. There is a fair share of swing here too, with the up-tempo "Sweet ...
| | Stan Getz With Cal Tjader CD (1958) SACD Hybrid
Listen Here!
$16.09 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
STAN GETZ WITH CAL TJADER is a classic, not only because it pairs the renowned tenor player (Getz) with the great vibraphonist (Tjader), but because the additional personnel on the session make it something of an all-star date. Drummer Billy Higgins, still some time away from his work on the groundbreaking experiments of Ornette Coleman, appears here on one of his first sessions. Bassist Scott LaFaro, who would achieve fame as a member of Bill Evans's legendary trio, also makes an early appearance. Pianist Vince Guaraldi, a leader and composer in his own right (his "Ginza Samba" is one of the highlights on the set), sits in, as does fleet-fingered guitarist Eddie Duran.
The ensemble--which has a lively, robust sound due to the instrumentation--moves effortlessly between highly lyrical ballads and fierce, up-tempo bop. The set includes several Tjader tunes, including the smart and swinging "Crow's Nest" and "Big Bear," while the group's treatment of the standard "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" displays remarkable sensitivity and sweetness. Though Tjader and Getz are naturally in the ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Listen Here!
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release ...
