| | Roger Whittaker Greatest Hits CD (1994)
Orlando Di Lasso: Lagrime Di S. Pietro
$6.95 Roger Whittaker's overall career is under-represented by a casual glance at his list of hit singles -- only seven in total, all of which were included on the Now and Then: Greatest Hits 1964-2004 compilation (although his hits actually came to an end in 1986, and his only forays into the album charts have been with similar compilations since then). However, Whittaker's hits do stand out, and one was always under the impression that he achieved more -- but seven hits it was, and only three of those reached the Top Ten. He became famous for telling stories and painting portraits with his music, and there was no better example than his biggest success, "The Last Farewell." Also included was his first European success, "Mexican Whistler," which first alerted the public to his skills at whistling as well as singing, a skill used to great effect on his final ...
| | Godfather Trilogy 30th Anniversary 3 Godfather: Trilogy 1, 2 & 3 CD (2001) Original Soundtrack
Orlando Di Lasso: Lagrime Di S. Pietro
$13.49 Original score composed by Nino Rota, Carmine Coppola, Pietro Mascagni.
No small part of the success of The Godfather was director Francis Ford Coppola's coup in getting Italian composer Nino Rota, best known for his scores to Federico Fellini's films, to write its music. Rota borrowed and transformed a theme from an earlier work of his as the score's main motive, presenting a lovely, lonely, minor-key melody that evoked the Italian heritage on which Coppola built the film's sense of grand tragedy. The melody was highly serviceable, working both as a single trumpet tune and as the basis for dances and other musical moments throughout the film. Coppola also brought in his father, Carmine Coppola, to handle some of the music on both The Godfather and The Godfather, Part II, with the elder Coppola taking over more extensively on The Godfather, Part III, which was produced after Rota's death. Soundtrack albums for all three films reached the charts, and now Silva America Records has put together an album of music from the three films, newly recorded by the City of Prague Philharmonic conducted by Paul Bateman. The ...

| | The Best Of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere CD (2007)
Orlando Di Lasso: Lagrime Di S. Pietro
$10.49 Issued in 2007, this Andrea Bocelli collection presents many of the Italian classical/pop-crossover artist's most memorable vocal performances. Highlights of the compilation include "Sogno" and "Because We Believe," tracks that fully reveal Bocelli's emotive and resonant voice, as well as duets with Celine Dion ("The Prayer," a delicate ballad) and Sarah Brightman (the wistful "Time to Say Goodbye"). While VIVERE may be a bit too concise for diehard Bocelli fans, it serves as a perfect introduction to the beloved singer.
Classical crossover mainstay Andrea Bocelli's first greatest-hits collection to date, released nearly a decade-and-a-half after he made his album debut in 1994, The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere includes many of his best-known songs plus five new recordings exclusive to this compilation. His international breakthrough album, Romanza (1997), is well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Sarah Brightman on "Time to Say Goodbye." His most successful album, the classical crossover follow-up effort Sogno (1999), is likewise well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Céline Dion on "The Prayer." Later albums Cieli di Toscana (2001) and Amore ...
| | Arturo Sandoval Danzon (Dance On) CD (1993) Dance On
Orlando Di Lasso: Lagrime Di S. Pietro
$10.79 All songs written by Arturo Sandoval except "Groovin' High" (John "Dizzy" Gillespie), "Tres Palabras" (Osvaldo Farres/Ray Gilbert) and "Suavito" (Maria A. Gomez).
DANZON won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Performance. "A Mis Abuelos" was nominated for Best Instrumental Composition and Best Arrangement On An Instrumental.
Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval comes close on Danzon to cutting the Afro-Cuban masterpiece everyone's awaited since his glorious sound first surfaced. From the animated solos on "Africa," "Tres Palabras," and "Conjunto" to the flowing, crisply articulated lines on "Groovin' High," Sandoval plays with imagination, verve and flair, displaying a more original and distinctive concept than on any of his GRP albums to date. He's joined by many top Latin musicians, plus special guest ringers like Vikki Carr, Bill Cosby, and Gloria Estefan, but there's no pandering or stylistic compromises to integrate them into the proceedings. For those who've longed for Sandoval to cut loose, here's the evidence that justifies his reputation. ~ Ron Wynn
Includes liner notes by Fernando Gonzalez.
