A perennial all-star and paragon of consistency, Bernie Williams patrolled centerfield for the New York Yankees starting in 1990 with grace and a certain coolness. A classically trained guitarist, he also gained renown within baseball circles as the sport's preeminent musician. Throughout the history of baseball there have been many major leaguers who have fancied themselves musicians. However, outside of Arthur Lee Maye, an outfielder who led a moderately successful doo-wop combo, the Crowes, in the '50s, and Scott Radinsky, a relief pitcher who fronted two highly regarded '90s punk bands, Ten Foot Pole and Pulley, most of these athletes' ambitions have generally been reserved, and rightfully so, for hobbies.
However, Williams's 2003 debut, THE JOURNEY WITHIN, a deft jazz record with an infusion of Latin themes, proves him an able guitarist in the tradition of Grant Green, as well as an impressive songwriter whose day job just happened to be baseball star. Williams-penned compositions such as "La Salsa En Mi," "Just Because," and "Enter the Bond" reveal him at home with all styles and paces, while his take on the classic-rock standard "Dust In The Wind" displays a keen ear for improvisation. Overall, a promising debut from a young lion who just coincidentally happened to be....

This Cd was a pleasant surprise of music from the NY Yankees centerfielder. The first song is fantastic! The rest of the music is like Bernie's personality at times... smooth, subdued, and full of "quiet" emotion. The guitar playing is very clean and many of the the songs have some great melodies. I would have liked to hear more "upbeat" songs...but overall, it was a good purchase! Submitted by a reviewer (Chepachet, RI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

A man of many talents... Being a loyal Yankee fan I was impressed to hear that Bernie played classical guitar and greatly looked forward to hearing it for myself.
It is beautifully done, expressing an element of fun, sensitivity, genuine passion, obvious professionalism, thoughtfulness, great creativity and vision.
Play on, Bernie, play on! Submitted by a reviewer (Windsor, VT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$14.65 As one reviewer said of the cheerful music and personality of this increasingly popular voice of smooth jazz guitar, it's Disneyland all the time with him. In other words, Positive Energy, the name of his second genre disc, wasn't just a happy marketing tool. And the title of this disc is appropriate, too, because with the co-production help of founding Spyro Gyra keyboardist Tom Schuman, Oliver digs deep into a rich variety of influences for a multifaceted romp through the worlds of pop, jazz, urban/hip-hop, ...

Journey Within CD music
$13.15 This live album by the progressive rock outfit Colosseum was originally released in 1971.
The 2003 reissue has remastered sound and comes with one previously unissued bonus track.
Recorded in March 1971, Live wasn't just a souvenir with live versions of favorites, although studio versions of half of the songs ("Walking in the Park," "Rope Ladder to the Moon," and "Lost Angeles") had appeared on prior albums. There were also three previously unrecorded items, those being the bluesy 15-minute Clem Clemson-Jon Hiseman original "Skellington," "Tanglewood '63" (in which Dick Heckstall-Smith's jazz sax came to the forefront), and the ten-minute charge through the standard "Stormy Monday Blues." Even on some of the songs that had been previously issued on studio releases, there's the difference of hearing Chris Farlowe (who didn't join until mid-1970) on lead vocals -- a blessing or a curse, depending on your taste for his piledriving approach. ...
