Da Unexpected album
$8.75 At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional fare and original Christmas songs.
She shifts through styles, offering fans from all musical camps a gift of their own. Her "Silent Night" shows off a studied vocalization where liquid phrasing ...
| | Boyz II Men Christmas Interpretations CD (1993) Remastered
Da Unexpected CD music
$7.85 This is part of "20th Century Masters: The Millenium Collection" series.
Indeed, it is the most wonderful time of the year, and this reissue of 1993's Christmas Interpretations arrives under the Universal 20th Century Masters series, which has launched its own subset of holiday releases. Produced by fellow soulful crooner Brian McKnight, this ten-song workout is not a collection of holiday favorites (aside from the traditional "Silent Night" that opens and closes the recording), but a series of brand new holiday compositions based on the quiet storm market. The Boyz are in fine form, as per usual, and the production ...
| | Rihanna Rated R CD (2009)
Da Unexpected music CDs
$14.64 "Russian Roulette," released weeks prior to Rated R, just hinted at Rihanna's sudden desire to provoke. Even with the realization that it is metaphorical, the song startles with its hesitant gasps, spinning cylinders, and verses that are glacially paced, where a cold piano line and the slight inflections in Rihanna's voice are front and center. And then there's an audible ...

| | J-Zone Pimps Don't Pay Taxes CD (2002)
Da Unexpected songs
$13.09 Despite the generous 70 minutes of music spread over his pair of earlier EPs, Pimps Don't Pay Taxes is really "Captain Backslap," J-Zone's official debut full-length, and, without mincing words, it's a horny, hilarious masterstroke, an instantaneous smack-talking classic that picks right up where its brilliant predecessor left off. To be exact, it cherry-picks "190" and "No Consequences" from Presents a Bottle of Whup Ass, then surrounds those songs with 20 other cuts or skits of unadulterated, crackpot genius. If you want technical accuracy, the album is actually billed as an "Old Maid Billionaires" presentation, and between them, J-Zone's sidekicks in rhyme Al-Shid and Huggy Bear do, in fact, show up on fully half the long-playing tracks, both MCs at the very tops of their games throughout. J-Zone, though, is still very much the obvious brainchild and puppet master behind this beast, not only in a musical sense but in a conceptual one as well. There is no coherent narrative to the album, per se, yet Pimps nevertheless ebbs and flows and ultimately holds together like, yes, a concept album. The themes? Sex (or just as often the lack thereof), money, sex, fame, and sex, not necessarily in that order. Contra the commercial rap pack, of course, it is played as parody and put-on. It could ...

| | Hello, Dolly! CD (1967) Remastered
Da Unexpected CD music
$10.09 Principally recorded at Webster Hall, New York, New York on January 19, 1964. Includes liner notes by Daniel Guss.
Carol Channing had her greatest Broadway role (to date) in this hit Broadway show, and her scatty style and unmistakable squeaky voice came over perfectly on this album. The many highlights from Jerry Herman's stunning score included the tender 'It Only Takes A Moment' and 'Put On Your Sunday Clothes', but it was the title number, a good old-fashioned rouser, that won the Grammy for song of the year - in the middle of the beat boom! The album itself lingered for 58 weeks in the US Top 40, peaking at number 1.
Few Broadway musicals have proven as timeless as Hello, Dolly! (1964). On this 2003 Deluxe Version, not only has the 1964 Original Cast Recording been sonically overhauled -- utilizing top-shelf digital remastering -- but also significantly augmented with six supplementary recordings and ten-minutes-worth of recollections from a 2003 interview with Carol Channing. The centerpiece is the David Merrick adaptation of Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker (1956). When coupled with Gower Champion's impeccable direction and choreography, as well as Jerry Herman's equally memorable score, (pardoning the pun) the stage was set for an irrepressible blend of laughter and song. The ensemble are likewise superb, boasting the respective talents of Channing as Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi, Charles Nelson Reilly portraying Cornelius Hackl, and concurrent newcomer Eileen Brennan as Irene Molloy. ...

Da Unexpected CD music
$6.59 Containing ten of Joe Simon's biggest hits released during the late 1960s and early '70s ("The Chokin' Kind," "Teenager's Prayer," "My Special Prayer"), The Best of Joe Simon is an all-too-brief compilation that shuts out most of his vibrant '70s material, as well as some of his finest songs released during the years covered. If you want a more thorough summation of this phase of Simon's career (and you really should), seek out 2001's Monument of Soul (released by RPM); and, if you want a taste of some of the hits from later in the '70s, seek out 1997's Music in My Bones: The Best of Joe Simon (released by Rhino).
