Fatha Hines Vol. 1 music CDs
$14.69 Opening with some beautiful synclavier and Lyle Mays' exquisite soaring synths on 'Barcarole', this is an atmosphere album. It moves from delicacy to beauty and is arguably the most complete album of his incredible career. The delightful 'James' (a tribute to James Taylor, listen to the guitar inflections) is complemented by the awesome 'Au Lait'; and if that was not enough, this contains surely Metheny's finest moment, 'Are You Going With Me', a song that builds and builds over the most fabulous rhythm, and even after nearly nine minutes it leaves you begging for more. A stunning piece of music that is neither jazz nor rock.

| | Charlie Haden Not In Our Name CD (2005)
Fatha Hines Vol. 1 album
$15.39 With a cover that directly references bassist Charlie Haden's first recording under his own name, 1969's LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA, this 2005 album features an updated version of the LMO ensemble. As on the earlier disc, the spirit here is one of peaceful protest; while the former outing was in reaction to the Vietnam War, this record takes the George W. Bush administration to task, especially regarding the war in Iraq.
Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though never flashy--bass work, allowing the other musicians, particularly guitarist Steve Cardenas and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, to shine. This is big-band music that can shift with ease from avant-garde passages to swinging melodies, and the talent on hand adds weight to the underlying messages. Although it's difficult to express political outrage with jazz instrumentals, the LMO does exactly that on NOT IN OUR NAME, conveying discontent, sadness, and even hope with a potent, ...

| | Stan Getz Baubles, Bangles And Beads CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Fatha Hines Vol. 1 songs
$17.95 This excellent Stan Getz compilation brings together two live recordings that present the influential saxophonist at the peak of his powers. The first was recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1961 and features Roy Haynes on drums, Scott Lafaro on bass, and Steve Kuhn on piano. The second was recorded at a concert in Berlin in 1966 and features Haynes on drums, Chuck Israel on bass, and Gary Burton on vibraphone.
Getz's classic sax sound, the definition of cool, is front and center here, and there's an easy, accomplished interplay between the musicians. There are elements of straight bop, minimal understatement, and the bossa nova feel Getz was well known for at the time, but all of these styles coalesce into one gorgeous sound on these two outstanding live sessions.
Stan Getz is considered one of the greatest ...
