Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. Reissued, re-mastered, and re-sequenced for the 21st century, Herb Alpert's 1979 album RISE still has the big hair and polyester feel of the early '80s, though club remixes of two of the cuts, "Rotation" and "Aranjuez (Mon Amour)," update the producer/trumpeter's sound for a new audience, with the latter even adding trendy Arabic cadences. The title cut, with its laconic, laid-back feel and insistent bass riff, was also the backing track for the Notorious B.I.G.'s 1990s hit "Hypnotize." The album marked a triumphant comeback for Alpert, its sophisticated, upscale production blending his signature trumpet flourishes with contemporary touches such as massed synthesizers, disco beats, and orchestral backing.

With a cover that directly references bassist Charlie Haden's first recording under his own name, 1969's LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA, this 2005 album features an updated version of the LMO ensemble. As on the earlier disc, the spirit here is one of peaceful protest; while the former outing was in reaction to the Vietnam War, this record takes the George W. Bush administration to task, especially regarding the war in Iraq.
Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. This excellent Stan Getz compilation brings together two live recordings that present the influential saxophonist at the peak of his powers.
