Barilari
$15.55 Brendon Small and Gene Hoglan proved their animated death metal band Dethklok had the chops to rock out like a living, breathing group on THE DETHALBUM. On DETHALBUM II, Small and Hoglan make Dethklok sound more like a real band than ever before--for better and worse. Without a doubt, these songs rock hard. The production is tighter and the attack is even heavier than it was on the first album, but surprisingly, that ends up being a slight weakness rather than a strength. What made THE DETHALBUM special was that the songs were funny, but not jokey; tried and true metal fans could appreciate the humor that was mixed into the heaviness, while the wit drew in metal neophytes. But on DETHALBUM II, Small and Hoglan have gotten so good at lovingly embodying metal clichés that the songs aren't as overtly funny or catchy as they were on the first album. Some tracks are almost indistinguishable from music by a genuine death metal band (to casual listeners, anyway). With DETHALBUM II, it feels like Small and Hoglan are courting metal fans ...
| | Dream Theater Black Clouds & Silver Linings CDs (2009) Special Edition
Barilari
$21.19 Special Edition CD includes the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs.
Dream Theater's tenth long-player is about as dense and challenging as any album in the band's discography and emphasizes not only the virtuoso members' stupefying musicianship, but also their most aggressive and thoroughly metallic songwriting tendencies. The sixteen-minute opener "A Nightmare to Remember" quickly establishes this agenda via frequently thrash-paced staccato riffing, some of John Petrucci's most blistering guitar solos ever, and the return of drummer Mike Portnoy's syncopated growls, which provide contrast for singer James LaBrie's soaring melodic elegance. "The Count of Tuscany" is a heady prog-metal magnum opus brimming with more ideas, notes, and time changes over 19 minutes than most ...

Barilari
$20.69 This Limited edition of DEGRADATION TRIP features bonus material from the
The impact Jerry Cantrell made with his former band Alice In Chains set the blueprint for hard rock in the 1990s like few others. Widely imitated yet never successfully replicated, Cantrell remains a seemingly boundless fountain of crunchy, groove-heavy riffs and eerie vocal harmonies. After a compromise with his label (Roadrunner Records) to release a one-disc version, Cantrell's musical vision can finally be appreciated with the breadth and sequencing he originally intended with DEGRADATION TRIP VOLUMES 1 & 2.
The eleven additional cuts are far from scraps recovered from the cutting room floor. "Pro False ...

$12.19 Atlanta's Mastodon climbed to the top of the metal heap the old-fashioned way. Taking the template for success etched by Metallica, the band captured the imagination with a series of albums that offered potent heaviness and relentless experimentation. After graduating from respected indie Relapse, they released 2006's acclaimed BLOOD MOUNTAIN, an album with a fire motif/fantasy adventure concept that opened numerous ...

| | Mahp In The Rye CD (2004)
Barilari
$16.45 Wading throgh the vast charted and all too oft traveled waters of today's popular music can be a double-edged venture at best. However temporarily empowering it might feel to sing along to the scores of hooky and endlessly repeated choruses, one is too often left with the inexplicable notion that one has heard this all before and, perhaps, maybe even done better the first time.Enter the MAHP, a southeastern Wisconsin based rock band led by one fearless and disarmingly, almost, naive Mark Harrod. The use of the word "naive" here is used quite endearingly as there are times when it seems that the most intellectually punishable of crimes in modern society may well be the wide eyed and genuine belief in something and the resolution to express it; openly, purely and simply. The MAHP do this voluminously on their self-released debut album, "In the Rye".The MAHP do more here than play songs, they weave sonant musical tapestries. There are no suspicious notions of racing through filler to get the hooks out. The arrangements are solid and well spoken, driven by articulate and aggressive acoustic guitar, amply supported by the ethereal textures of Scott Cannaday's electric guitar work. Brad Hawes' solid, sophistacated drumming and Chris Jakubiak's proficiently smooth bass work punctuate perfectly each careful nuance of Harrod's voice. While Harrod's vocal delivery may more loosely ...
| | Ronin Sun Rises In The East CD (2004)
Barilari
$9.35 This collective known as Ronin was formed in late 2002 in NYC, and boasts some serious talent, with all the band members having extensive experience and credits in the world of rock...and beyond. Drummer Michael Sapp is a world travelled jazz percussionist; Ranger X and Captain T usually travel in tandem, with the latter having no less than 6 releases to his credit while Ninja Boy fits in as the renaissance man, who works the production end, but also writes scores for TV and film when he's not laying pipe with Ronin. Still with me? In addition, lyrics on many of the tracks here come courtesy of underground NYC poet the Madd Doctor. This is merely the Cliff notes version of their lengthy and intimidating bio. For the full effect, check it out for yourself at RoninGiven such varied individual accomplishments and musical leanings, I was bracing for an unrefined, hodge-podge of everyone doing their own thing...and that usually means a shit record. Let's just say that is not the case with Ronin's debut "The Sun Rises In The East". On this record, Ronin touches on all the aforementioned styles and compacts them into a fiery, focussed slab that I've been spinning non-stop for two weeks.Don't let the whispery, jazzy intro of "Six Eight" throw you, as before you know it, you are thrown headlong into some sharp riffage and complex bass that evolves into a real progressive jam, bringing to mind mid-era Rush and Opiate era tool. "Take The Sky" and "Portal" continue on by showcasing the hypnotic vocals and picturesque guitar soundscapes of Captain T and Ranger X. Huge praise for Emily Greene from New York rock band The Mynks, who steals the show with her soaring, riveting vocals on "Portal" - just one of the gems on this debut. These bouts of melody and melancholy are usually short, but are integral to the layering and overall effect of the songs - and almost always end up kicking your ass with bursts of ad-lib bass and drum work. Ronin continue to push the envelope ...
