Coming off their competent, but hardly groundbreaking, debut, The Red in the Sky Is Ours, few would have picked At the Gates as death metal superstars in the making. Yet, with their sophomore effort, the grandly named With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness, the boys from Gothenburg, Sweden, made significant strides to proving most everyone wrong. Possibly their most experimental outing, the album contained a number of highlights in "Burning Darkness" and "Raped by the Light of Christ" (oooo-kay), whose unbridled fury and insidious melodies would serve as rough blueprints for future triumphs. On the other hand, technically ambitious, more involved experiments like "Ever-Opening Flower" and the seven-minute "Primal Breath" come off too contrived and ultimately can't compare in terms of intensity to their more concise counterparts. Still, it was obvious that the once samey Swedes had serious potential, if only they could find a way to harness their power and aggression into shorter bursts -- something they would achieve with their next effort, the much improved Terminal Spirit Disease. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) one of the greatest melodic death metal albums i am not a big fan of melodic death bands like soilwork, in flames, and arch enemy as i feel none of these bands maintain the raw energy and sheer beauty of at the gates second album, with fear i kiss the burning darkness.
this album surpasses their first release the red sky is ours in terms of musician-ship and strength.
while their first album was very technical this album helped to pioneer the gothenburg sound, with its well thought out melodies and truely harrowing vocals.
the drums are pretty basic with some nice rhythms and a few blastbeats here and there, but what stands out on this album is the guitar and vocal work.
the guitars have a lot of melodies but unlike the aforementioned bands, at the gates use their melodies to retain the heavyness found in death metal, listen to the break of autumn and primal breath for some hair raising guitar work.
i listen to various forms of metal ranging from grincore, deathgrind, noisecore, and metalcore and i have pretty much heard all the best vocal work metal has to offer and although tomas lindberg from ATG is nowhere near the most extreme, i feel he is one of the best due to the chilling emotionally drained shriek he uses which raises hairs on the back of your neck.
and if your wonderng why am reviewing this album NOW its because i cant believe nobody else has reviewed one of the greatest extreme metal albums of all time.
and remember NO album could ever be perfect hence the four stars Submitted by criminall_insane (london UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

"Spirit and Truth" is a project that is much more interactive, leaning heavily on the praise and worship stylings that have become a staple in contemporary church services. What we have created on this project is a collection of songs that we hope will be sung bycongregations long after our tour comes to town."While music has always been a big part of his life, it is only one of Loren's many endeavors.
