| | Spacemen 3 Playing With Fire CD Spacemen 3 Discography of CDs
For the majority of its six-year career, of which 1988's PLAYING WITH FIRE is the approximate midpoint, the British trio Spacemen 3 pursued its sound-for-sound's-sake obsessions in near-total oblivion. It turns out, however, that the band was merely a decade or so ahead of its time. Spacemen 3 featured guitarists/keyboardists Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember and Jason "Spaceman" Pierce, who later formed Spectrum and Spiritualized, respectively. The commercially and critically successful '90s work of these two sonic iconoclasts earned much more interest than the material of Spacemen 3 did during its 1985-1991 lifespan.
The band's third full-length studio album, PLAYING WITH FIRE finds the band moving beyond its earlier, somewhat more song-oriented work into more abstract and improvisational areas. The highlight is the corrosive "Suicide," one of the band's most visceral works. The Taang! CD contains four extra live tracks, including a radically different version of "Suicide," from a 1989 EP.
Producers: Jason Pierce, Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember.
Spacemen 3: Jason, Sonic Boom (vocals, guitar); William Carruthers (bass guitar).

The Wire (8/99, p.57) - "...their biggest album at the time....Sonic Boom's avant aesthetic tempered {jason] Pierce's tendency towards drippy songforms, and the latter had a strong line in beautiful, melancholy melodies and lyrics..." Mojo (Publisher) (7/99, p.116) - "...[Spacemen 3] at their most confidently minimal and succinct....plenty of nape-tingling moments..." Spacemen 3 Playing With Fire Songs Playing With Fire Review

$11.49 Reissued several times in various forms since its initial 1987 release, Spacemen 3's second album is a remarkable departure from the band's 1986 debut, SOUND OF CONFUSION. With critical darlings Sigur Ros releasing an album called ( ) that features eight untitled songs, this Icelandic outfit continues to go against the grain in a manner so esoteric that it's easy to imagine the band's oft-cited influence on Radiohead. Ironically, ...
| | Television Marquee Moon CD (1977) Remastered; Digipak
Playing With Fire songs
$10.89 New York's 1970s punk was markedly different to that of Britain. Rather than reject the past, American groups deconstructed its forms and rebuilt them with recourse to the music's strengths. Television's leader, Tom Verlaine, professed admiration for Moby Grape and the folk rock of early Fairport Convention. Elements of the latter appear on this album's title track, which offers a thrilling instrumental break, built upon a modal scale. Verlaine's shimmering guitar style provides the set's focus, but his angular compositions are always enthralling. A sense of brooding mystery envelops the proceedings, and Marquee Moon retains its standing as one of the era's pivotal releases.
Rhino's 2003 expanded edition of Television's seminal debut, Marquee Moon, doesn't add much on the surface -- in addition to the de rigueur liner notes and loving ...

| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Playing With Fire CD music
$11.79 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed ...

Playing With Fire CD music
$16.45 Sometimes the road back home isn't as the crow flies. David Shelby definitely took the scenic route to his first album. "When you're born into a proud Polish-Russian family they issue you an accordion and a bowling ball," David states, " My dad taught me to use both! It's easier to pick up a split with an accordion." David was soon playing that squeeze-box along with the Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and later, Garth Brooks records the country station was spinning in his native Detroit. Detroit! They love their beer cold and their cars hot. They rock hard and have always had a soft spot in that big industrial heart for country music. Picking up the trumpet in grade school led to a couple of twists along that fabled road. David went on to a degree in Jazz and Contemporary Media, singing tenor with the university Vocal Jazz Ensemble. He toured as an ace trumpet slinger with Chubby Checker, ...
