| | Spacemen 3 Playing With Fire CD Spacemen 3 Discography of CDs
For the majority of its six-year career, of which 1988's PLAYING WITH FIRE is the approximate midpoint, the British trio Spacemen 3 pursued its sound-for-sound's-sake obsessions in near-total oblivion. It turns out, however, that the band was merely a decade or so ahead of its time. Spacemen 3 featured guitarists/keyboardists Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember and Jason "Spaceman" Pierce, who later formed Spectrum and Spiritualized, respectively. The commercially and critically successful '90s work of these two sonic iconoclasts earned much more interest than the material of Spacemen 3 did during its 1985-1991 lifespan.
The band's third full-length studio album, PLAYING WITH FIRE finds the band moving beyond its earlier, somewhat more song-oriented work into more abstract and improvisational areas. The highlight is the corrosive "Suicide," one of the band's most visceral works. The Taang! CD contains four extra live tracks, including a radically different version of "Suicide," from a 1989 EP.
Producers: Jason Pierce, Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember.
Spacemen 3: Jason, Sonic Boom (vocals, guitar); William Carruthers (bass guitar).

The Wire (8/99, p.57) - "...their biggest album at the time....Sonic Boom's avant aesthetic tempered {jason] Pierce's tendency towards drippy songforms, and the latter had a strong line in beautiful, melancholy melodies and lyrics..." Mojo (Publisher) (7/99, p.116) - "...[Spacemen 3] at their most confidently minimal and succinct....plenty of nape-tingling moments..." Playing With Fire
$11.49 Reissued several times in various forms since its initial 1987 release, Spacemen 3's second album is a remarkable departure from the band's 1986 debut, SOUND OF CONFUSION. Reduced to a trio (guitarists/keyboardists Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember, Jason "Spaceman" Pierce, and bassist Pete Bassman) following the departure of the first album's drummer, Spacemen 3 makes an asset out of the newfound lack of percussion, giving THE PERFECT PRESCRIPTION a considerably less rock-oriented sound with much more open space in its varied, subtle arrangements. Playing With Fire
$11.95 "()" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and for Best Recording Package.
With critical darlings Sigur Ros releasing an album called ( ) that features eight untitled songs, this Icelandic outfit continues to go against the grain in a manner so esoteric that it's easy to imagine the band's oft-cited influence on Radiohead. Ironically, the vocals here depart from the previous albums' Robert Smith-like tones for a sound highly reminiscent of Radiohead's Thom Yorke. Perhaps SR is just returning the favor. In any case, most of ...

Playing With Fire
$12.39 1983's HARD found drummer Hugo Burnham replaced by a drum machine. Additionally, the album's production substituted the band's previous angularity for a lush, polished sound augmented by backing singers and synthesizers, which longtime fans found hard to take. But both "Is It Love" and "Womantown" have a smoky mystery, while "A Man With a Good Car" is an energetic backward glance at the band's post-punk roots.
Gang Of Four were a British new wave band formed in 1980 by lead singer Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill. They had four albums hit the Billboard charts between 1981 & 1983. Two of those albums comprise this 2-on-1 CD. Hard is making its worldwide CD debut and Solid Gold has been out of print for years. Wounded Bird. 2003.

| | Gun Club Miami CD (1982)
Playing With Fire
$11.15 While the Gun Club's debut, FIRE OF LOVE, was a masterpiece of untamed punk blues, follow-up album MIAMI, produced by Blondie's Chris Stein, achieves a fuller sound and a more varied stylistic palette without sacrificing any of its predecessor's intensity. The revved-up blues of yore are still here ("Devil in the Woods," "Fire of Love"), but wild-child singer Jeffrey Lee Pierce and company also tackle everything from Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Run Through the Jungle" (in a surprisingly faithful version) ...

| | David Shelby I Came To Play CD (2007)
Playing With Fire
$16.45 Sometimes the road back home isn’t as the crow flies. David Shelby definitely took the scenic route to his first album. “When you’re born into a proud Polish-Russian family they issue you an accordion and a bowling ball,” David states, “ My dad taught me to use both… It’s easier to pick up a split with an accordion.” David was soon playing that squeeze-box along with the Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and later, Garth Brooks records the country station was spinning in his native Detroit. Detroit! They love their beer cold and their cars hot. They rock hard and have always had a soft spot in that big industrial heart for country music. Picking up the trumpet in grade school led to a couple of twists along that fabled road. David went on to a degree in Jazz and Contemporary Media, singing tenor with the university Vocal Jazz Ensemble. He toured as an ace trumpet slinger with Chubby Checker, Wolfman Jack, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Lou Christie and others. His writing credits include arrangements commissioned for the Korean War Memorial and work for the Pittsburg Symphony. All that time he kept an eye on that two-lane blacktop. Leaving the touring life behind for a spot with R&B legends The Regular Boys, he began singing more and writing in earnest. He ...
