For the majority of its six-year career, of which 1988's PLAYING WITH FIRE is the approximate midpoint, the British trio Spacemen 3 pursued its sound-for-sound's-sake obsessions in near-total oblivion. It turns out, however, that the band was merely a decade or so ahead of its time. Spacemen 3 featured guitarists/keyboardists Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember and Jason "Spaceman" Pierce, who later formed Spectrum and Spiritualized, respectively. The commercially and critically successful '90s work of these two sonic iconoclasts earned much more interest than the material of Spacemen 3 did during its 1985-1991 lifespan.
The band's third full-length studio album, PLAYING WITH FIRE finds the band moving beyond its earlier, somewhat more song-oriented work into more abstract and improvisational areas. The highlight is the corrosive "Suicide," one of the band's most visceral works. The Taang! CD contains four extra live tracks, including a radically different version of "Suicide," from a 1989 EP.

1983's HARD found drummer Hugo Burnham replaced by a drum machine. Additionally, the album's production substituted the band's previous angularity for a lush, polished sound augmented by backing singers and synthesizers, which longtime fans found hard to take. But both "Is It Love" and "Womantown" have a smoky mystery, while "A Man With a Good Car" is an energetic backward glance at the band's post-punk roots.
Gang Of Four were a British new wave band formed in 1980 by lead singer Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill. They had four albums hit the Billboard charts between 1981 & 1983. Sometimes the road back home isn’t as the crow flies. David Shelby definitely took the scenic route to his first album. “When you’re born into a proud Polish-Russian family they issue you an accordion and a bowling ball,” David states, “ My dad taught me to use both… It’s easier to pick up a split with an accordion.” David was soon playing that squeeze-box along with the Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and later, Garth Brooks records the country station was spinning in his native Detroit.
