Smash Mouth has had an odd journey since their first album. They started out seeming like the friendly cousins of the kind of bands who play on the Warped tours and get worshipped by West Coast skaters. A little ways down the road, a cover of "I'm a Believer" in the Disney film SHREK endeared them to millions of pre-adolescents, adding an aspect to the band's appeal that's best exemplified by their depiction as cartoon characters on GET THE PICTURE's cover. A good-natured pop ditty about the "Seventh Grade Dance" further skews things toward the kid-pop demographic. At the same time, though, for anyone demanding the repetition of the band's initial salvo, "Hot" and the appropriately titled "Fun" are pretty close relatives to that first big hit "Walking on the Sun." Smash Mouth spends the rest of the album turning out the kind of highly rhythmic, melodic, sunny pop that's at the heart of all their hits, even pulling a UB40 by covering a Neil Diamond song in a reggae style and upping the ante by adding former English Beat singer Ranking Roger to the tune. Clever, those lads.

Summertime "Fun" It's great to hear new material from Smash Mouth. The music on "Get the Picture?" is similar to that of "Astro Lounge" and "Smash Mouth," while the lyrics seem to focus on relationships and California's car culture. The tunes about the latter provide some of the highlights, like "Hot" and "105." Sonically, "Space Man" and "Fun" are tracks that really stand out. This disc is perfect for summer listening or getting into a sunny frame of mind. The only complaints are that the production sounds a little thin in places and that with most songs at or under the 3 minute mark (and two versions of "You Are My Number One"), the disc ends too soon at just over 37 minutes. I guess the length of their two previous releases just spoiled us. Submitted by a reviewer (Savannah, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Get The Picture?
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS does a great job of tracing the group's musical evolution from hippie blues band to kings of Southern rock. And, while the unreleased studio version ...
