Both a critical and popular success 2002's "Hijas De Eva" showcases Spanish composer/vocalist Pedro Guerra's compellingly thematic work based on the lives and plights of 13 different women. Contains the title track and "Canto De Trabajos."
2002 album from Spanish singer/songwriter & former member of the group Taller Canario de Cancion. After singing at small local venues in Madrid, his songs began to get attention and be performed by famous Spanish singers such as Paloma San Basilio, Victor Manuel, and Ana Belen. In 1994 Pedro Guerra was awarded for the first time after his song "Ondas" was voted the best of the year in Spain. One of his major achievements was composing the soundtrack for Mararia, a movie directed by Jose Betancor. Played by the Canary Islands' Philharmonic Orquestra, the album was nominated by the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Sciences for Best Movie Soundtrack. Who is this woman, Lhasa de Sela? This wonderful set has no liner notes re: her past, but, since the music's what matters ,let's go with that. She writes & sings--with delicacy, passion and insolence--in Spanish. The music absorbs a truly dizzying range of styles & influences: tango, klezmer, flamenco, film music, Gypsy/Rom, Tex-Mex, ECM Records-style soundscapes and Tom Waits. Waits seems to be a big influence: check out the fractured tango/waltz "De Cara A La Pared." Mournful clarinets wail, percussion sounds like thunder in the distance and Lhasa's voice--versatile, tartly seductive in a bittersweet way--draws you in. The adventurous, especially those who are into world-music fusion, should get this.
