RUSH IN RIO is a unique 3-CD document that features an entire set recorded at a Rio de Janeiro show in November 2002 that was also the last date on the Vapor Trails international tour. Originally recorded for the Rush concert video/DVD of the same name, this collection is raw around the edges but still manages to capture the live might of this critically underrated progressive rock power trio. Playing South America for the first time, the Canadian threesome waded deep into their canon for this crowd of 40,000 rabid fans. In addition to serving up expected Rush perennials like "Tom Sawyer," "Limelight," and "The Spirit of Radio," Rush doled out a few more obscure nuggets including a medley of "By-Tor and the Snow Dog," "Cygnus X-1," and "Working Man."
More recent fare also gets trotted out including "Earthshine," "One Little Victory," and "Ghost Rider" from VAPOR TRAILS. Add the expected Neil Peart drum solo found within the instrumental tour de force "O Baterista," including a healthy swing jazz segment, and RUSH IN RIO proves to be another stellar addition to the band's catalog.

Rush In Rio Music Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Best Live Rush Being the Rush-o-phile that I am, I've had a chance to sample lots of live Rush, and this is the best so far! Good Live Album but not very different to the previous ones. Very good songs selection with a particular touch on "O Baterista" where Neil Peart give us, as usual, an excellent performance. "Resist" is a very good acoustic version. This album is not very different than DSL, with new VT songs included, maybe they should consider some modifications to some songs like they did on "Closer To The Heart" some years ago. But anyway is a RUSH album and it should be included in the collection of every real fan of Rush. For the people who does not know Rush (very rare) this album offers us an excellent combination of their classics and their recent work. Stunning power and emotion I find it hard to believe that some people have complained about the sound of this album. Sure, it isn't quite as pristine as the last few Rush live albums, but it was all recorded in a single show, and for that, the quality is amazing. It's a very punchy and powerful mix--particularly Alex's guitar has a bite that it's never had on a live album before.
And, all being from one concert, this really FEELS like the experience of seeing Rush in concert. Plus, what a concert! The reason why Geddy's vox are a bit tenative on the first couple of songs is obvious: the guy is simply not used to having 40,000 backing singers who sing alone with every note, including the instrumental bits! Seriously, this fanatical audience just puts the sheer power and emotion of this show far ahead of any of their other live albums. It's a brilliant, gripping trip through their back catalogue, all with the new twist of the amazing Brazilian audience participation. This is one of the coolest live albums of all time--don't dare miss it. Submitted by Matthew Ward (Las Vegas, NM, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
muffled rush I don't know if it is just the copy I got, I doubt it, but the sound is very muffled, at times it gets louder and softer by itself, most of the time you can hear the crowd but can hardly hear Geddy Lee or the music. It sounds to me like a bootleg taped from the audience, and not a very good bootleg. But as always what you can hear is great classic Rush Submitted by a reviewer (Schaumburg IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The last show. . . As a long time Rush fan I thought. . . how could they do another live album? We'll they did, although it's not perfect soundwise because of crowd noise the event is worth a listen to. I'm going to get the DVD too!
