Culture Shock album
$11.18 After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto Tune-laden crowd pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays the slower "baby-making" jams this time around for a set of largely up-tempo songs, capped by a sultry collaboration with Keri Hilson ("Number One").

| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Culture Shock music CDs
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks like the chest-thumping "So What" and the mischievous, bouncing "Bad Influence." In softer moments, like the ballad "I Don't Believe You" and the soulful "One Wrong Foot," Pink channels her personal experience into expressions that carry ...
| | Al Jarreau Christmas CD (2008)
Culture Shock songs
$9.09 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his ...

| | Joss Stone Colour Me Free! CD (2009) Import
Culture Shock CD music
$30.38 The "free" in the title to Joss Stone's fourth album apparently refers to the neo-singer breaking free from the shackles of her major label, EMI, who apparently have not let Joss be Joss. That this constricting argument happens to be the exact same story line Stone used for 2007's Introducing Joss Stone, the splashy diva power trip meant to unveil the "real" singer, is conveniently forgotten, as is the modern R&B of that makeover, with Joss returning to all the retro-soul of her first two records. The one lingering element of Introducing is a propensity for melisma-laden oversinging, a tic that stands out in the warmer, funkier settings of Colour Me Free! Still, her raw vocal skills remain impressive, as does her taste in soul, ...

| | Joss Stone Mind Body & Soul CDs (2004) Import
Culture Shock album
$13.85 For MIND, BODY & SOUL, released only a year after her 2003 debut, THE SOUL SESSIONS, Joss Stone conveys an incredible degree of musical maturity that goes far beyond her 17 years. Wisely, Stone reunites with many of the same R&B/soul names that helped make her first recording such a success, including Betty Wright, Latimore, and Timmy Thomas.
This sophomore Stone disc presents a deep stack of all-original soul songs that finds the Devon, England vocalist and her crew sounding a bit more contemporary. "You Had Me" pairs Stone's powerful voice with a clavinet, a dash of strings, and a funky beat for a track that wouldn't be out of place on a Beyonce record. The down-tempo material also works well, whether it's the call-and response slow jam "Jet Lag" or "Right to Be Wrong," with its Muscle Shoals vibe of crisp guitar licks and laidback organ. The UK native also successfully dabbles in reggae (the loping "Less Is More") and more gospel-flavored fare (the uplifting "Security"), stretching her expressive pipes beyond the emotive R&B that made her famous. With confidence and class, Stone secures her star status on MIND, BODY & SOUL.
European two CD pressing of the Soul superstar's 2004 album features a bonus disc including six live tracks that were recorded during her 2005 concert at the Dutch Church De Duif: 'Super Duper Love', 'Fell In Love With A Boy', 'Spoiled', 'Less Is More', ...
| | Leon Kittrell Satin Soul CD (2007)
Culture Shock CD music
$13.15 Like many great R&B vocalists, Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass and Jeffery Osborn, Leon started his musical career as a drummer and eventually moved up front as a featured lead singer. After years of honing his craft and performing in local bands where he grew up in Tucson Arizona, Leon moved to Los Angeles California along with band member and friend, now renowned Malaco recording artist Billy Ray Charles. There they formed a group adding bassist Ted Butler and keyboardist Rich Cason called ‘The Bare Facts’ later becoming one of LA’s hottest nightclub attractions Formula IV.Under the banner Formula IV, the band, with Leon as featured vocalist, received their first professional record contract with Rocky Road records a subsidiary of Clive Davis Arista label. While there, they laid tracks for label mates Al Wilson, The Fifth Dimensions and debuted the album “Come and get yourself some” to critical acclaim. With the addition of Earl Espy on bass and the soulful Alfreda James, Leon and company changed their name to Formula V and became the house band for one of the most prestigious adult nightclubs in Los Angeles, Freddy Jets Pied Piper. Artists such ...
