Babbletron's Mechanical Royalty finds Brooklyn's Jaymanila, DJ Pre, and Cool Calm Pete working similar sci-fi grooves to their friends from Def Jux -- dark samples, snaking basslines, and disturbed beats abound. But Jaymanila and Cool Calm Pete seem a little more laid-back than the average Def Jux rhymesayer, as much A Tribe Called Quest as Aesop Rock. "Beware the black monolith in deep space," they drop on the MF Doom-produced '70s space-age funk number "Space Tech Banana Clip" -- the record's most unique and instantly accessible track -- sort of the screenplay to the brilliant Blaxploitation sci-fi flick that never was. It's a good indicator for the whole album -- creative, surprising, gritty, New York through and through, but with a strangely balanced sense of humor and futurism launching it into tomorrow. ~ Charles Spano Babbletron Mechanical Royalty Songs | 1. | I Need to Be |

Mechanical Royalty album
$12.25 Boston's Edan has scored the hip-hop triple crown, rapping, programming and sampling at a masters level on his second full-length. As an MC, he bows down while hyping himself up on the wink-nudge titled "Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme," giving extended shout-outs to the history of hip-hop, from Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash through to Ultramagnetic MC's and Prince Po, all over a break as dusty and faded as an episode of Carnivale. "Polite Meeting" offers a beat and sample collage on par with the current work of DJ Shadow and RJD2, and one is left to really ponder at the possibility of Edan trying to perform the beats and vocals live. Def Jux bright star Mr. Lif makes a guest appearance on the heavily psychedelic "Making Planets," which leads into a full-on Hendrix-inspired freaky-blues interlude. Percee P and Insight also drop by to flow over some of Edan's time and space warping musical beds (to call these "beats" would be an immense oversimplification) but Dagha guests on the grittiest rocker, "Rock'N'Roll" which manages a full-on Marshall stack set to ten, ...

| | Donny Hathaway CD (1971)
Mechanical Royalty music CDs
$9.09 With just one exception, Donny Hathaway's second full-length is a covers album, featuring one of the most pop-averse artists in soul music surprisingly offering interpretations of contemporary hit material like "A Song for You," "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother," "Magnificent Sanctuary Band," and (most effectively) "Put Your Hand in the Hand," a laidback yet rolling, gospel-choir version of the song he was born to sing. In striking contrast to his debut, Donny Hathaway is a very dark record, and it opens on a particularly low note, with "Giving Up" (a 1964 R&B hit for Gladys Knight & the Pips). Most of Hathaway's performances are slow, piano-led laments, powerfully delivered but with little melodic sway to convert listeners. It's no coincedence then, that the only up-tempo song, "Magnificent Sanctuary Band," is the standout. "Little Girl" is a nice piece of gospel testifying with great male harmonizing on the chorus, and "He Ain't Heavy, He's ...
