Diana Krall has a good voice and plays decent piano, but this somewhat ridiculously packaged Verve CD seems like an obvious attempt to turn her into a pop icon, and sex symbol to boot. The bland arrangements by Claus Ogerman (who conducts the London Symphony Orchestra or the Los Angeles Session Orchestra on each track) border on easy listening, while Krall and her various supporting musicians, including John Pisano, Russell Malone, Christian McBride, and Peter Erskine (among others), clearly seem stifled by their respective roles. STERNTALER, the 1978 solo album from former Neu member Michael Rother, returns in this 2000 rerelease.
This reissue contains three exclusive bonus cuts--"Lichter Von Kairo," "Patagonia Horizant," and "Sudseewellen" (Extended Dance Remix).
Michael Rother's work in the early-to-mid 1970s, with an early version of Kraftwerk and then as half of the duo Neu! made him a Krautrock icon. Later in the decade, he set out on his own, and his second solo album, STERNTALER, is well in keeping with the legacy he'd already established. A bit less strident and rock-oriented than its predecessor, FLAMMENDE HERZEN, the album makes the most of repetitive/robotic rhythms and crystalline droplets of electronic melody. Along with Eno's contemporaneous works, it marked the full flowering of the first ambient era.
Sterntaler marked the beginning of Michael Rother's deep preoccupation with introspective melodies projected outward. Where Flammende Herzen was full of anthemic instrumental rock that was constructed to be just that, Sterntaler is more reflective even if its drive is as insistent and mechanically accurate. Again collaborating with producer Conny Plank and Can's drummer, Jaki Leibzeit, Rother set out with Sterntaler to create true electronic rock music -- even if what he came up with was the first real ambient trance music. Unlike his former bandmates in Kraftwerk and Harmonia who had wholeheartedly embraced electronic music as an end in and of itself, Rother was deeply entrenched in the idea that the entire idea for synthesizers and drum machines was to make rock & roll itself more futuristic. What's so odd about that notion is his method of composition. On the opener, "Sonnenrad," his signature electric guitar sound plays melodies that are almost folk-like in their simplicity over his trademark Motorik percussion and rhythmic churn. On "Blauer-Regen" Leibzeit's cymbals mark the simple chord changes on an introspective ballad filled with the sounds of falling rain cascading down through the guitars.
