For their second album, Sonny and Cher largely dropped both the overt Spectorisms and derivative folk-rock of their debut, 1965's LOOK AT US, instead refining the two into an utterly unique blend. There were few protest songs as dazzlingly-arranged as "Laugh At Me," originally released as a Sonny solo single. The follow-up "The Revolution Kind," included as a bonus track, shows the political leanings which would eventually get Sonny elected as a Republican congressman.
Much of the album consists of covers--"Summertime" a la the Zombies' breathy version, "Tell Him," "I'm Leaving It Up To You," etc.--all given the inimitable Sonny and Cher treatment. Even this early in her career, Cher seems certain that attitude counts for more than innate talent. And for a guy who publicly played the fool, Sonny's orchestral jangle sounds surprisingly influential at several decades' remove.

Released in 1978, LONG LIVE was the final Ronnie James Dio-fronted release by Rainbow. Dio would go on to front Black Sabbath, while guitarist Richie Blackmore would reunite with Deep Purple. The album caps off a string of tremendous releases from one of the strongest branches on the heavy-metal family tree.
The title track is a fan favorite and one of the strongest tunes from this era--a heavy rock tune written for arenas. "Lady of the Lake" is a solid number featuring haunting background vocals. "L.A. Lasse Marhaug and Nils Henrik Asheim started their collaboration in 2004 at the All Ears festival in Oslo, Norway. This turned out to be a fruitful meeting between two musicians of very different backgrounds. Marhaug's feedback and Asheim's organ sounds in the Oslo concert started to reflect how the work was to develop. Asheim works here with half-stops and subtle playing techniques that create multiple layers of sound with a vibrating or fluctuating character, as well as with the power of the full organ.
