"Gravedigger" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
The Dave Matthews Band gained its reputation as a collective effort, so much so that Matthews's first official solo album might have been expected to signal a drastic change in direction. Ultimately, Matthews found a way to have his cake and eat it too on SOME DEVIL. While the distinctive contributions of his noted band members are absent here, he nevertheless goes for a not-dissimilar singer-songwriter-meets-worldbeat-pop vibe. Though Leroi Moore's sax and Boyd Tinsley's violin don't color the arrangements, SOME DEVIL offers a rhythm section--Daniel Lanois/Emmylou Harris cohorts Tony Hall and Brady Blade--that's adept at mixing rock, funk, jazz, and New Orleans R&B with Matthews's cerebral compositions, much as they did with Harris on WRECKING BALL. Jam-band peer Trey Anastasio of Phish joins longtime Matthews sideman Tim Reynolds on guitar, contributing tasteful and concise playing.
While many of the tunes bear a strongly propulsive element, not least on account of Matthews's trademark percussive guitar style, SOME DEVIL is mostly more low-key than the DMB's work. "Grey Blue Eyes" sounds like it could have come off a latter-day Peter Gabriel album, while "Baby" is Matthews's acoustic-guitar-and-strings shot at "Yesterday." Towards this end, the blues-rocking "Gravedigger" is reprised at the disc's close in a quiet acoustic version.
Initial pressings included a 5 song bonus disc.
Recorded at Studio Litho, Studio X, Seattle, Washington and Bastyr University, Kenore, Washington between October 2002 & June 2003.

Dave Matthews Some Devil Songs Some Devil Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Outstanding! Wow, what a great album! Artistic, challenging, moody. No top-40 on this baby. Reminds me of old Genesis. This is my first Dave Matthews album...now I want to get all his others! Submitted by matrix (Sequim, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One of my Favorites! This was my first Dave CD I got. Before this CD I knew most of his popular songs, but that was about it. This album is what first turned me into a Dave Matthews fan. This CD is amazing, it really shows how talented Dave is. Because this was Dave's first solo album, i felt that it was very intimate. The lyrics of the songs are so well writen, Dave is a real poet. His lyrics are so original. This album has many great songs. I feel like I have a huge connection with the songs on this cd. I listen to this CD whenever something is wrong and I just need to get away. I strongly recommend this CD. I promise that you will enjoy it. Simply Amazing You can easily say this album is different from the rest, but I still love it from beginning to end. I believe the sound and lyrics are perfect. How could anybody NOT like this. I guess some people are just picky. Submitted by brock (Hartford, SD) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Looooove it I'm so glad Dave explored his own talents without losing his sex appeal and unique thought that he puts behind his lyrics. I love the original group, but this is something different--change is good as long as the band always comes back togther. :-) Submitted by Amy (Ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
What's a synonym for "bland"? I own almost every DMB CD but this is sad. I'd rather have heard solo work from the band. Submitted by a reviewer (Boise) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Some Devil
$15.35 "So Much To Say" won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. CRASH was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Rock Album, and "Too Much" was nominated for Best Rock Song. "Crash Into Me" was nominated for 1998 Grammys for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and Best Rock Song.
What is it about The Dave Matthews Band that makes them so eclectic yet cohesive, so conventionally unconventional? The answer may lie in Matthews' rangy, distinctive voice and his capable acoustic-guitar work, which keeps the music centered as the band pulls from a myriad of musical styles. In fact, the music often seems to mimic his singing, following him from gruff and gravelly to pleading and sweet.
The players, clearly comfortable with each other, shift effortlessly through funk, rock, jazz and folk, much as on their 1994 breakthrough, UNDER THE TABLE AND DREAMING. Like that one, CRASH is rich and heavy with complex textures and rhythm, and accessible all the same.
CRASH makes good on the promise of the Dave Matthews Band's major-label debut, UNDER THE TABLE & DREAMING, by delivering more of the jazzy, funky folk-tinged ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Some Devil
$6.79 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge ...
| | Dave Matthews Band Busted Stuff CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Some Devil
$12.69 "Where Are You Going" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
The Dave Matthews Band built its huge following in the '90s through their explosive live shows, where their swirling, propulsive blend of funk rhythms, jazzy harmonies, and unusual time signatures endeared them to crowd after crowd. BUSTED STUFF seems like the culmination of a process that's been underway ever since the band's heady, jam-band beginnings. While the musical muscle-flexing of Matthews and company is still in evidence, a greater emphasis than ever seems to be placed on the melodic songcraft aspect ...

After the unexpected runaway success of COME AWAY WITH ME, where to next? The good news about Norah Jones's sophomore effort is that she and producer Arif Mardin decided to leave well enough alone in most regards. There are no screeching guitars, thumping drum machines, or padding synthesizers, and most of the tempos are slow or laid-back--way back. Guests Garth Hudson and Levon Helm of the Band contribute to "What Am I to You?" and Dolly Parton makes an appearance on bassist Lee Alexander's "Creepin' In." Jones's backing group, the Handsome Band, provides just the right stripped-down accompaniments and subtle touches to support the blessing that is her voice.
Jones knows how to luxuriate in the sumptuousness of her sound and infuse such unlikely lyrics as "my toes just touched the water" with a sensual blues sensibility. On top ...
