Pouncing onto the British music scene like the hyperactive spawn of the late-1970s hard-rock scene, the Darkness unveiled their 2003 debut, PERMISSION TO LAND, to great success in the UK. Led by unitard-wearing, falsetto-brandishing vocalist/guitarist Justin Hawkins, the group revels in the kind of pop metal once made famous by Def Leppard and Whitesnake, boasting big guitar riffs and driving rock rhythms. The band's not-so-secret weapon is Hawkins himself--an irrepressible, high-kicking frontman who gleefully unleashes lyrics such as "a nimbus of blue light surrounds a crimson paw" in a voice that ranges from a growl to a wail rivaling Queen's Freddie Mercury or Judas Priest's Rob Halford.
Although the Darkness may come across as tongue-in-cheek metal revivalists, they're entirely sincere on soaring power ballads such as "Love Is Only a Feeling" and "Holding My Own." And when Hawkins screams out "guitar!" before the guitar solo in "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," there's no mistaking the intention of these energetic British lads--they've come to rock.

First off,it takes a few listens to be able to deal with the singing:).Singer is definitely one of a kind.Songs are solid throughout.Nothing sounds better than Les Pauls played through Marshalls with minimum effects.Bet this band rocks live.Sounds like AC/DC with Brian trying to sing after a wicked groin shot.

Good Ole Rock n Roll
Reminds me of the early rock and roll stuff. Highly enjoyable and I bet you can't keep from banging on the steering wheel in time to the music!

 HAIL THE RETURN OF ROCKNROLL
Hell yeah this is ROCK AND ROLL people pure and simple the way its meant to be, already people are dissing them as a record company gimmick thats trying to gain sells from the retro rock market and thats total bulls**t. These guys have the great rock songs, the look, and most importantly the attitude to bring "real" rocknroll back into the spotlight. Sure they're tounge in cheek but "aint" ALL great rocknroll supposed to be. The only way you could not like these songs on this LP. would be if you were a writer for Rolling Stone magazine and we ALL know they hate real rocknroll.Everytime i hear the radio or the tv play "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" i have to jump up and crank it up, COME ON its a great song , for gods sake lighten up people!! Have'nt we heard enough whining from Staind and all these nu-metal/Rock bands crying how they're life is messed up because their dads left them. Lifes a bitch, we all know that but does rocknroll have to be, it should give us somthing to escape to and revel in, so forget all your problems and don't worry about whats cool and whats not, let your hair down and embrace THE DARKNESS!!

You're right. They're the best friggin' band in the last 20 yrs. You're right again; expect to see tons of crappy "rawk" bands just like em'.
Great nasty lyrics, actual guitar solos, a sense of humor, and you have the Darkness; the best band on the planet, bar-none. Let the worshipping begain...
