Waiting For You
$42.59 GENESIS ARCHIVE #2 contains both studio and live tracks recorded between 1976 and 1992.
Volume One collected work from Genesis' eight-year period with Peter Gabriel. This three CD follow-up collects rarities--studio outtakes, B-sides, remixes, and previously unreleased live tracks--from what the band refers to in the liner notes as their "20 year experiment" with Phil Collins as lead singer (1975-95).
Most of the songs lean toward the band's pop-soul side, although there's a work-in-progress version of "Mama" that (due to its obviously unfinished quality) hints at their earlier, more abstract style. Other highlights include the amusingly titled "Do the Neurotic," which has a great electric 12-string riff and a chugging synth chorus, and an interesting, dance-oriented remix of "Invisible Touch," whose big drum sound is redolent of late '80s pop.
Includes 65 page booklet with liner notes by Tony Banks.
Genesis: Phil Collins (vocals, drums); Tony Banks (guitar, keyboards); Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett, Daryl Stuermer (guitar); Bill Bruford (glockenspiel, maracas); Chester Thompson (drums).
Producers: Genesis, David Hentschel, Hugh Padgham.
Compilation producers: Nick Davis, Geoff Callingham.
Engineers: Craig Schertz, Nick Davis, Geoff Callingham.

| | Art Tatum 20th Century Piano Genius CDs (1996)
Waiting For You
$18.75 Recorded live at the home of Ray Heindorf in Beverly Hills, California between 1950 and 1955. Includes liner notes by James Lester, as well as excerpts from a conversation between Hank Jones, Adam Makowicz, and Lou Stein.
20TH CENTURY PIANO GENIUS was previously released as two separate LPs, PIANO DISCOVERIES on 20th Century Fox (FTS 3029, 3033) and PIECES OF EIGHT on Smithsonian (R 029). It includes previously-unreleased material from those same sessions.
There is virtually no pianist, living or dead, who has possessed same amount of technical facility as Art Tatum. The Franz List of jazz, Tatum was known for his ability to play jaw-dropping runs up and down the piano. In fact, his skill was so amazing that he often sounded like two or more pianists playing at once.
On 20TH CENTURY PIANO GENIUS, the legendary pianist performs solo on all 39 tracks. Recorded informally in a Hollywood, California home, this disc highlights the perfectionism and sheer intensity of Tatum's musicianship. Each selection is expertly played, and the din of glasses clanking and people chatting between tunes actually adds intimacy to the recording; this is not some pristine studio endeavor, it's a listening party. Musical gems are found throughout, ...

Waiting For You
$8.99 For those who were not yet convinced of Doug Martsch's status as an indie-rock guitar god, this collaboration between his Built To Spill and Boise, Idaho's Caustic Resin--which is stocked with former Built To Spillers--is overwhelming proof. The sound of virile jamming coming from a scene that prides itself on compactness of song may prove disarming at first, but the ferocious post-Sonic Youth interplay between Martsch and Brett Netson is too overwhelming not to strike a sympathetic chord with the listener. It also helps that the song-vehicles for this raucousness aren't the serious type. "When Not Being Stupid Is Not Enough" and "Shit Brown Eyes" take themselves as lightly as their titles imply (few lyrics, all bruising guitars), while the reconstruction of Kicking Giant's "She's Real" proves that even when they're goofing, the Boise contingent has great taste in pop material.
Built to Spill/Caustic Resin sees the two title bands working together to perform four songs; the first two songs are penned by Built to Spill, the third is penned by Caustic Resin, and the final track is a cover of a Kicking Giant's "She's Real." "When Not Being Stupid Is Not Enough" is an incredible nine-minute ride, filled to the emotional breaking point with classic Doug Martsch guitar dynamics, his confident vocals, and angry lyrics. The song would seem completely at home on the band's album Perfect From Now On, as it's as subtle and finely crafted as it is noisy and monumental. It is, without a doubt, a must-listen for fans. "One Thing" is one of the angrier songs in Built to Spill's arsenal; it doesn't really go anywhere, and it might best be described as a more bitter version of the band's There's Nothing Wrong With Love-era pop sound. "Shit Brown Eyes" is more psychedelic than the other songs on the EP. What it lacks in cohesion, it makes up in virtuoso guitar attacks. Martsch's trademark guitar squalls make it worth a listen, but Brett Netson's vocals are no match for Martsch's. "She's Real" is interesting and epic, suggesting a shimmering '50s rock song gone indie, amid bunches of angst and a somewhat painful harmony. The extended jam midsong gets a bit tedious, foreshadowing the Neil Young cover that was to come on Built to Spill's Live album. "When Not Being Stupid Is Not Enough" is the real reason the EP deserves attention. It surpasses the remaining tracks by a long shot. If new editions of Built to Spill's Perfect From Now On or Keep It Like a Secret albums are ever issued, the song would be a most welcome extra track on either. Until such time, Built to Spill Caustic Resin is essential listening. ~ Tim DiGravina

| | Camera Obscura If Looks Could Kill (2007)
Waiting For You
$7.39 "If Looks Could Kill" is one of the highlights from Camera Obscura's wonderful album Let's Get Out of This Country. The pounding percussion, VU-guitars, and tremendous melody make it a highlight of 2006 as well. The other two songs are fine B-sides: "Hands Up Baby" is a restrained and atmospheric ballad penned by guitarist Kenny McKeeve, whereas "Alaska"'s an organ-heavy rocker with some nice references to trees (when was the last time you heard anyone singing about sycamores, birches, or hawthorns?) and a solid groove. You'll absolutely need this EP to complete your CO collection. ~ Tim Sendra
