| | Henry Threadgill This Brings Us To, Vol. 1 CD (2009) Digipak
Tieru music CDs
$12.89 Henry Threadgill has, in the framework of abstract music, been a stalwart, spontaneous composer whose personal sound is near impossible to identify, or certainly codify. A listener who enjoys very challenged music would have difficulty in discerning what is made up or written out. The elusive nature of Threadgill's kind of progressive jazz has to confound even those most oriented to his quirky pieces. Where the quintet Zooid lands in this quirky quandary of pegging a signature sound is subject to guesswork, but it definitely has its own brand of concentrated cohesion. Between Threadgill's scattershot flute and alto sax, the sleek tuba or trombone work of Jose Davila, and Liberty Ellman's thorny electric guitar, sparks are always flying about in a collective discourse that is completely unpredictable. Electric bass guitarist Stomu Takieshi and drummer Elliot Humberto Kavee are practically secondary in this mix of give-and-take improvisation that needs little rhythmic support or urgency. What seems telepathic or in zig-zag patterns is bursting with colors to the point where those lines are blurred with the virtuosity of these players. Then again, most of the tracks do have a funky underpinning anchored by Takieshi and Kavee that lends a more contemporary, ...

| | Chris Botti In Boston CDs (2009) With DVD
Tieru CD music
$14.99 A sequel of sorts to Chris Botti's 2006 PBS special, LIVE WITH ORCHESTRA & SPECIAL GUESTS, the September 2008 event LIVE IN BOSTON found the sartorially splendid cool jazz trumpeter accompanied by the Boston Symphony and a collection of celebrity vocalists. Also available as a DVD, the concert delivers an overview of popular music, with jazz standards like "I've Got You Under My Skin" right alongside "Ave Maria" and Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You." Whether featuring rocker Steven Tyler, AMERICAN IDOL chanteuse Katharine McPhee, or pop-opera superstar Josh Groban, all the tunes are presented in Botti's inimitable, Chet Baker-influenced uber-smooth style.
Chris Botti in Boston features trumpeter Chris Botti along with a bevy of name artists performing live with the Boston Pops Orchestra at Symphony Hall in 2008. Fully documented as a concert film and album, the night is an intimate and soulful birds-eye view of the supple-toned trumpeter who has grown into his role as a virtuoso since his time backing up Sting -- who of course appears here. Perhaps it isn't surprising then the concert is subtly reminiscent of Sting's own classic coming of age concert moment Bring on the Night. If Sting's 1986 show was an attempt to reintroduce himself to the world as a pop-cum-jazz artist, then Botti's 2008 show is clearly a showcase for the one-time ...

| | Joan Enguita Two Suitcases CD (2005)
Tieru CD music
$17.09 Joan Enguita, folk/Americana singer/songwriter from Lancaster, California released her first fully produced CD in 2005 to rave reviews. She has had over 70 performances in 2005, including Southern California, West Coast, Ireland and Denmark. REVIEW--MUZIKMAN---WWW.MUZIKREVIEWS.COM"Joan Enguita has put together a solid recording with TWO SUITCASES. Her beautiful falsetto voice is reminiscent of women vocalists that have made their mark such as Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. Strange enough, after I had this thought I went to her website and started to read her bio and found that she got her start with a guitar and a Joan Baez songbook! With a strong stable of veterans from Nashville, Enguita puts together a solid recording; in fact, I did not hear a track that had any weaknesses. Everything about this release is top shelf, grade A material. From the lyrics, production, and musicanship to overall product that you hear coming out of your speakers, Enguita nails it down--she owns every word vocalized. This is tradional music in the sense that is does not have that aimed-for-the-charts gloss and fabricated sheen. This woman sings all the way from her toes to her heart on every song. You will hear everything from dobro to the Jew's Harp interspersed amongst the tracks. I heard a lot on this CD besides the oustanding music and terrific vocals. The lyrics were exceptionally warm and heartfelt.I can appreciate originality and an honest to goodness effort by an indie artist, and a smart one at that. Enguita had the record mastered by Capitol, which explains why the sound is so crisp and clean. This is as good as any country-pop that you are hearing on the radio any given day now. Actually it is better than a lot of the the music that is raking in the cash by the truckload. I say no more, check it out for yourself. You will see." --Keith HannalekREVIEW: WWW.COFFEEHOUSETOURS.COM "With her bags packed and ready for the next journey, Joan Enguita opens "Two Suitcases" with sudden ease. The first few notes that belt out of Joan's mouth are the hook, line, and sinker that is destined to capture listeners everywhere. The opening song is playfully flirty and fun as Joan dances with the lyrics in a one on one showdown of authority. Joan's stunning vocals is the selling point that will have you thanking the heavens above for producing such an angelic sound. "Two Suitcases" is hard to close; it's jammed pack full of a folk sound, united in harmony with country and Celtic. From start to finish, Joan holds the audiences' ...
