Here And Wow music CDs
$13.55 This release includes a bonus DVD featuring live performances of "Criss Cross," "Rhythm A Ning," and "Nutty" recorded in London, England in 1965.
Given the plethora of live recordings made of Thelonious Monk in the 1960s (when everyone suddenly seemed to recognize his genius 20-plus years after he began composing and playing), this compilation provides a valuable service in bringing together the best of those performances. Between 1961 and 1965 Monk toured regularly with a quartet that featured Charlie Rouse on tenor sax and a revolving bassist and drummer, and was particularly well received (and documented) in Europe. The sprightly, angular sections of "Epistrophy," the stealthy groove-prowl of "Blue Monk," the beautiful ballad "Ruby, My Dear," and the witty, spastic "Rhythm-A-Ning" ...

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Here And Wow album
$13.15 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic ...
