Rutter: Mass Of The Children / Rutter, Cambridge Singers
$13.39 Anno Domini: the seventh year of Augustus Caesar's reign. In the Roman province of Judea, Jews return to the city of their birth for the census. A bright star in the night over Bethlehem marks the birth of Jesus Christ. Years later, Roman commander Messala (Stephen Boyd), who was brought up in Judea, takes command of the Roman garrison in Jerusalem. His Jewish boyhood friend Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) greets him. Messala is delighted. But when Judah refuses to name Jewish patriots, Messala sentences him to the slave galleys and imprisons his mother, Miriam (Martha Scott), and sister, Tirzah (Cathy O'Donnell). Judah vows revenge.
In BEN-HUR, William Wyler's much-lauded epic, the story of Judah's search for his mother and sister and his quest for revenge intersects with crucial biblical events such as the Sermon on the Mount and the crucifixion. Wyler gets fine performances from Heston, Boyd, Jack Hawkins (as a Roman admiral who befriends Judah), and Hugh Griffith (as an Arab sheik who dreams of racing ...

Rutter: Mass Of The Children / Rutter, Cambridge Singers
$16.69 In an era when the definition of religious music has expanded to include everything from Christian death-metal to gospel rap, it's nice to know one can still find an album of traditional prayerful tunes. MORE THAN 50 MOST LOVED HYMNS collects popular church songs performed in a sweeping orchestral/choral style that will evoke warm memories of the grand holiday cathedral services of yesteryear.
Perhaps inspired by the sounds of angels on high, the music here is majestic in a vintage MGM film-score manner, complete with huge string sections, ...

| | Herbie Hancock Gershwin's World CD (1998) Hybrid; SACD Hybrid
Rutter: Mass Of The Children / Rutter, Cambridge Singers
$15.59 GERSHWIN'S WORLD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "St. Louis Blues" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s).
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
The epitome of a 20th Century musician, Herbie Hancock has always traversed wildly divergent stylistic paths, finding his way easily into jazz, funk, fusion, dance-pop and more. His ability to make valid individual statements in all these genres is part of what makes his compositions and performances so rich. So it doesn't seem at all incongrous for Hancock to interpret the work of George Gershwin, redefining much of the Gershwin canon in the process (with assistance from some world-class compatriots). Hancock's stated aim for GERSHWIN'S WORLD is to get inside the pieces, illustrating their essence rather than knocking off rote versions of these standards. Towards that end, "St. Louis Blues" is transmogrified by the soulful vocals and funky chromatic harmonica of Stevie Wonder; "It Ain't Necessarily So" becomes an ominous, angular jazz vamp, with saxmen James Carter and Kenny Garret trading arch, sly interjections. Another genre-buster, Joni Mitchell, makes a case for a potential career as a jazz vocalist via her performance on "The Man I Love" and "Summertime."
Personnel include: Herbie Hancock (piano, organ); Stevie Wonder (vocals, harmonica); Joni Mitchell, Kathleen ...

Rutter: Mass Of The Children / Rutter, Cambridge Singers
$17.15 Le devin du village (The Village Soothsayer), is a one-act intermezzo composed by Jean- Jacques Rousseau and it was first performed at Fontainbleau in 1752. The opera was one of the most popular of its day and gave Rousseau a great deal of fame and wealth. King Louis XV so loved the work that he offered Rousseau a life pension, a great honor, but which Rousseau refused. The performance made in 1991 offered in Nuova Era's release is played on authentic instruments and it is conducted by a one of the earliest and famous specialist in this field such as Ren‚ Clemencic. Despite its importance, ...
