Hugh Jackman broke through to stardom as the claw-wielding Wolverine in the X-MEN films. However, Jackman's earlier roles had the charismatic Australian performing in musicals, particularly a 1999 production of OKLAHOMA!, where he portrayed ... Full Descriptionthe lead character, Curly McLain. THE BOY FROM OZ marks Jackman's triumphant return to the stage as Peter Allen, the 1970s theater icon (and a fellow Aussie). Although the production features an excellent supporting cast, it's clearly Jackman's show, as he belts out Allen's own tunes, while dancing with a fierce, flamboyant energy. "The Lives of Me" kicks things off with wah-wah guitar riffs and dramatic horn fanfare, before settling into a thoughtful mood that allows the spotlight to shine on Jackman and his emotive vocals. Other numbers ride the roller coaster of Allen's life, from the giddy highs to the tragic lows. Throughout THE BOY FROM OZ, Jackman carries the show, exuding a charm and grace that led to him winning a Tony Award for Best Actor in 2004.

While the show itself does not rate with the likes of South Pacific, Guys and Dolls and La Cage the music is still most enjoyable and, of course, Hugh Jackman's performance is unforgettable. What a disappointment !!! If this is a sample of the show...it's
pretty lame. Hugh sings ok but the
compositions are not good. Submitted by a reviewer (Indianapolis, IN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Jackman's great! Reviews say the show isn't that spectacular, but Hugh Jackman shines in the Peter Allen repertoire. Isabel Keating channels Judy Garland so closely that it's scary -- a bravura performance. Submitted by a reviewer (Columbia, SC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Jackman is fabulous! You can't judge the CD unless you have seen the show, which is great. Hugh Jackman is spell-binding in the show, and the music is even better when you know the story line. It's great anyway! Submitted by bigdbill (Dallas, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
captures only part of the show's energy I think I like this recording mostly because I did see the show with Hugh in November. To hear some of the songs without being able to picture what happened on stage does leave something to be desired but when you can...dynamite. Hugh Jackman is superb as is the young man who plays his boyhood self. Submitted by a reviewer (Boston, MA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$15.05 In the late 1990s, the television show SOUTH PARK sparked a trend of using figures associated with children's entertainment, such as puppets and animated characters, in the service of adult comedy. Depending on your viewpoint, this either generates marvelously clever social critique or cheap, tasteless jokes. Adding to the controversy ...

$13.99 Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, the Broadway musical WICKED creates a history for the two witches from L. Frank Baum's OZ books. Through composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz's emotive songs, the show reveals the unlikely friendship between Elphaba (Idina Menzel), who eventually becomes the Wicked Witch, and Glinda (Kristin Chenoweth), the Good Witch.
The dramatic, horn-laden "No One Mourns the Wicked" starts the story in striking fashion, with the death of the ruby-slipper-wearing Wicked Witch. As Glinda appears, Elphaba's ...

$14.25 Music composed by Leonard Bernstein. Lyrics written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green.
Donna Murphy stars as Ruth Sherwood, an aspiring writer from Ohio who is new to New York City, in this 2003 production of WONDERFUL TOWN. On each of Murphy's featured tracks, her voice is powerful and captivating. Her singing on the ballad "Ohio" is particularly poignant and entrancing; teamed up with Jennifer Westfeldt (as Ruth's sister Eileen), Murphy makes this song is one of show's true high points.
The swanky "One Hundred Easy Ways" moves along in a jazzier vein. On this selection, Murphy is accompanied by punchy brass figures and bouncy clarinet lines. Later in the show, listeners ...
