Inspired a cappella There must be many music lovers who rush to buy a disc on the strength of one track. This was my experience on hearing, in a recent BBC Radio 3 broadcast, this recording of James McMillan's 'O Bone Jesu'. I was transfixed. The disc became an instant must-have, even though the remaining tracks are plainsong or Tudor Polyphony, which normally hold little interest for me. Having acquired the desired MacMillan, I confess that the other tracks do make rewarding listening - especially Robert Carver's 'O Bone Jesu', the piece that inspired MacMillan to compose his masterpiece on the same text. The Sixteen and Harry Christophers deliver the goods faultlessly and breathtakingly, as they always can be relied upon to do. But my original reaction remains unchanged, and the disc is certainly worth getting for the MacMillan alone. The rest is bonus. Submitted by joanbutler (Yorkshire, UK.) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
