Instead of a straightforward take on an assortment of seasonal classics, Harry Connick, Jr. decided to make HARRY FOR THE HOLIDAYS, his second Christmas album in a decade, more of a swinging affair, thanks to his use of unorthodox arrangements. Sure, there's enough lush orchestrations on songs like "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and more secular fare like "Nature Boy" to make Nelson Riddle blush, but Connick does spice things up.
"Frosty the Snowman" turns into a brassy rhumba and the "Christmas Waltz" benefits from the kind of West Coast, cool time changes that you'd expect to hear on a Dave Brubeck outing. This New Orleans native also gives a nod to fellow southerner Elvis Presley by way of a crooned reading of "Blue Christmas" and country legend George Jones even gets recruited for the countrypolitan Connick-penned "Nothin' New for New Year." Other originals like the New Orleans funkified "Happy Elf" and the orchestral gem "I Come with Love" fare well alongside a snappy version of "Silver Bells" and an cover of Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" featuring Meters' guitarist Leo Nocentelli and a gospel choir. Connick's fresh approach to seasonal music will make you glad to join HARRY FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

There's no recording date information and the general packaging is minimalist, to say the least; but this double-disc set -- one live CD and one DVD containing the video equivalent of the same show -- delivers where it counts, in the music. The sound is such that there's very little audience ambience, but there's plenty of presence for the band and even more so for Lynn Anderson, who is in excellent form throughout. The CD is great, but the DVD is even better, not only with an excellent visual account ...

If one wants a good idea of where New York jazz was heading as of the year 2000, this album is a good place to start. Pianist Jason Lindner's Stretch Records debut showcases the big band he has paid dues with at New York's Smalls club for several years. The leader's piano plays a relatively minor role, but his prowess as a composer and arranger comes across loud and clear. Lindner's eclecticism is bold and purposeful, not trendy. A brief, highly modern intro opens the record, giving way to the classic, bop-oriented big-band sound of the title track, which features a great tenor break by guest soloist Gregory Tardy. But then trombonist Avi Lebovich's "Mr. Demargary" comes along, defying categorization altogether, setting up spirited trading between Alex Norris on flügelhorn and Diego Urcola on muted trumpet, as well as a sweet Fender Rhodes solo by Lindner. It's not bebop, it's not Latin, it's not funk: it's all of these things and more, a precocious brew with an urban, bohemian edge.
The album continues along these unpredictable lines. ...
