Powerhouse vocalist Josh Groban may not be all things to all people, but he's certainly many things to many people. An international sensation, Groban is a Broadway-ready belter, romantic crooner, and classical/pop crossover phenomenon. Groban largely shies away from the more operatic side of his musical personality on CLOSER, leaning more towards a lush, cosmopolitan style that finds him singing in Italian, French, Spanish, and English with equal aplomb.
While the album is speckled with adult-contemporary pop production touches courtesy of Groban's mentor David Foster, much of the record sports a cinematic, grandly orchestrated feel. And on the closing track "Never Let Go," his collaboration with ambient popsters Deep Forest, Groban even bucks for inclusion on a future volume of the PURE MOODS series, showing that he's always got another stylistic surprise up his sleeve. Closer Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Wow, wow, wow. This CD/DVD is well worth the price I paid (just over $30) because of the bonus tracks Mi Morena and She's out of my Life...
plus the 20 minute DVD (the Making of Closer) is quite good. I'm not going to review it. You need to experience this for yourself.
All I can say is it came about 2 weeks ago and I still haven't stopped listening to it. Submitted by danielle (Warren, CT, population1300 +/-) Was This Closer Music Review Helpful? Yes No
Remarkable talent Without question,Josh Groban is a talented star whose rise will continue for years to come. Whatever song he chooses to perform is made all the better because his voice captures every note and sends it to your soul. This latest CD is magnificent! Pure Energy Talented Person!!! This album is really super. By the time I listened to this album, Closer, I was amazed to hear his voice again & I think all the fans of Josh Groban will agree with me. He put pure energy when he recorded this album. When I listened to his music, I feel relax & at peace by just listening to his voice. I already have 3 CDs of Closer. And I just wish him to produce more albums to entertain all his fans. His first attempt to compose a song entitled, Remember When It Rained, it's simple but meaningful, whatever he had in his mind at the time he composed it. And of course, he is the one who played the piano. It's great that Josh finally released his second album & I can't wait for his next album. He's really a very talented person. Language is no barrier on this album Josh Groban has done it once again. This album is a wonderful mix of language, song and sound. From English to French, from Spanish to Italian, Josh covers it with wonderful grace and great authenticity. Classics like the popular Caruso also sung by the likes of Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli and Russell Watson are included here. Also included is the wonderful cover of Lara Fabian's Broken Vow. I was somewhat suprised to hear Josh's own version of She's Out of My Life, a song first introduced to me by 98 degrees. Mr. Groban shines in his writing debut in Remember When it Rained, simple but beautifully song with uplifting vocals. Finally, the amazing You Raise Me Up, the title proves true. No disappointments here, truly amazing! Submitted by Peter (St. John's, NL, Canada) Was This Closer Music Review Helpful? Yes No
Impressive maturity Groban's voice never ceases to amaze, and it continues to mature. It's unfortunate, though, that such vocals have to be buried beneath the schlock production values of David Foster (with a more sophisticated producer than Foster, I would have easily rated this disc a 5). Foster's own piano-playing is just as heavy-handed as his producing, and I despise those familiar old, metallic-sounding, Barry Manilow-style drum "climaxes" -- ugh! But the song selection IS nice, and Groban's voice adds incredible class and depth to each selection, in spite of the arrangements. This limited edition of Closer is a bit overpriced, but ultimately it's worth the cost for the two additional tunes, especially She's Out of My Life -- Groban blows Michael Jackson out of the water with his rendition. A very rich, entertaining album. Here's hoping that someday Groban will be allowed a producer worthy of his talent. Submitted by a reviewer (Warren, MI, USA) Was This Closer Music Review Helpful?
